🎁 Multus celebrates 4 years! Our journey so far ⬇️ 🟦 In 2020, Multus was created to make media that scales. 👥 Kevin Pan, Réka Trón and Cai Linton started Multus because they saw the need for a more sustainable food system and the potential of cultivated meat to help make that vision a reality. 🌎 They also saw the potential for engineering biology to overcome the core challenges in this emerging sector - which are: 🔒 Existing media formulations are too expensive as an input to food production. 🔒 Developing new media formulations is slow and expensive. 🔒 Inefficient approaches to media optimisation. 🔒 The limited availability of suitable ingredients. ⚠️ These problems put cultivated meat companies at risk of stalling at lab scale. 🟦 Today, Multus provides solutions that address all of these core challenges: 🔑 Our technology platform screens thousands of formulations in parallel to make media development cheaper and faster. 🔑 We use machine learning tools to handle complex optimisation. 🔑 We develop novel ingredients that can reduce food waste while making cultivated meat affordable. 🎂 As we celebrate 4 years into our journey, we are encouraged to see how far the industry has come globally as it strives to make a more sustainable food system. 📖 Read about our most recent company milestone: https://lnkd.in/erZAXKhx #AlternativeProtein #CultivatedMeat #CellularAgriculture #SustainableFoodSystems

⚡ Automated data analytics helps cultivated meat get from lab to market. 🔬 For cultivated meat companies with limited time and budget, early identification of which formulations keep cells healthy is vital. ⬇️ However, since data capture and analysis are often labour-intensive, this: 🔹 Slows down media development and optimisation processes. 🔹 Takes time and resources away from teams who need to focus on other aspects of scaling their product. 🟦 At Multus, we use automated image processing to track cell growth and morphology. 📊 We capture data every few hours throughout multiple passages rather than once per passage or per experiment. 📈 This way, we can get a clearer picture of media performance in our high-throughput system. ✅ Our technology reduces costs, saves time and can be scaled easily as a company grows from lab to market. #CultivatedMeat #CellularAgriculture #SustainableFoodSystems #FoodInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #BioEngineering #AI #MachineLearning

⬇️ Two major insights stood out during our time in Switzerland at #HackSummit2024 - these include... 1️⃣ The growing momentum in the sector 🌿 There continues to be a strong impetus around creating a sustainable and resilient food system. ✳️ The start-up ecosystem features dedicated individuals and companies that are eagerly pursuing this mission despite funding challenges. 🌍 The fact remains that in the upcoming years, we must produce more food with fewer resources. ✅ Innovations like cultivated meat provide one solution to do this. 2️⃣ The importance of funding 🧪 Delivering value and impact at scale requires specialised and first-of-a-kind infrastructure. 💶 Finding the capital to unlock such projects needs to come from a variety of sources, not just venture capital. 🧩 Government funding, project finance and new financial instruments are starting to be explored by companies to gain the funds they need. ⏩ Find out how Multus is helping scale cultivated meat from lab to market: https://lnkd.in/erZAXKhx Thanks to FoodHack and ClimateHack for such an inspiring event! #HackSummit2024 #HackSummit #ClimateTech #SustainableAgriculture #FoodInnovation #CultivatedMeat #BioEngineering #AI #MachineLearning

🤖 4 ways AI can optimise cell line establishment for cultivated meat ⤵️ 🧫 Cell lines are perfect for use in cultivated meat production because they are: 🔺 Consistent, 🔺 Characterised, 🔺 Reduce the use of animal cells. ⛔ However, since identifying and curating them is highly complex, there is a lack of well-characterised and commercially available cell lines for cultivating meat. 📗 A new resource from New Harvest explores the potential that machine learning has to accelerate cultivated meat technology. ✅ The paper highlights four applications where machine learning can be used to optimise cell lines; they are: 1️⃣ Network analysis 🔬 Machine learning can be used to model and interpret complex biological interactions to understand the state of a cell population. 2️⃣ Helping to analyse complex omics data 📊 By grouping functionality-related cells and profiling gene expression, machine learning can help identify and characterise new cell lines. 3️⃣ Aiding antibody design 🦠 The development of novel antibodies for cell sorting and identification can be aided by machine learning. 4️⃣ Mapping and enhancing genetic traits 🧬 Machine learning can accelerate gene editing technology to generate cell lines optimised for cultivated meat. 🟦 At Multus, we partnered with Extracellular to launch the first licence-free cell bank for cultivated meat. 🔷 This industry resource will help to advance B2B cell line development for the industry. ⏩ Learn more about this collaboration here: https://lnkd.in/dmYJaPHv Or read the new paper from New Harvest here: https://lnkd.in/eSYwp3XW #CultivatedMeat #CellularAgriculture #SustainableFoodSystems #FoodInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #BioEngineering #AI #MachineLearning #BioEngineering

⚡ In 2024 we’ve tested 3000+ candidate formulations. 🟦 The big pain points of media development and optimisation in cultivated meat are time and cost. 🧑🔬 As these processes need a lot of experiments, they are slow and expensive, resulting in: 🔹 Significant time pressure where companies have to achieve results for investors within limited periods. 🔹 An inability to focus on other areas of R&D because development is taking priority. 🌀 Multus accelerates media development so teams can focus on other key areas as they scale their business. 🔬 We run experiments with thousands of different media formulations and use machine learning tools to handle complex optimisation. 🤖 Our AI enables thousands of parallel experiments to take place, giving us a data point every 3 hours. 🧪 By investigating large sets of ingredients in parallel, we can identify formulations that keep cells healthy. ✅ This reduces costs, saves time and can be scaled effortlessly as a company grows from lab to market. ❔ Want to break away from traditional, iterative and slow methods of development and optimisation? ⏩ Contact the Multus team here: https://bit.ly/3PNtNM6 #CultivatedMeat #CellularAgriculture #SustainableFoodSystems #FoodInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #BioEngineering #AI #MachineLearning

Today I'm at Cultivate for the 8th annual UK conference on cellular agriculture. I'm here to share how Multus is using AI to reduce feedstock costs for cultivated meat production. But beyond ourselves, these events remind me of W. Brian Arthur's words on the nature of technology: 🖊️ "...technology is not merely a catalog of individual parts. It is a metabolic chemistry, an almost limitless collective of entities that interact to produce new entities-and further needs." Interactions at these events are fundamental to the progress of technology. 👏 Thank you Dr. Alexandra Sexton and team for bringing us together. #alternativeprotein #cellularagriculture #cultivatedmeat
