As creator economy platforms like Substack resegment the world of media, it’s no surprise that they turn more and more to video. The same thing happened to text-based media and journalism in the last century—as TV proliferated, media went from being mostly text-based to mostly video-based over time. Substack is interesting for so many reasons: - Empowering creators vs. centralized control. - More aligned incentives between platform and creator. - Giving writers and journalists stability in a time of industry upheaval. - Long-form, thoughtful content vs. dopamine addiction. Excited to be working with Chris Best, Hamish McKenzie, Jairaj Sethi on this.
Today we’re bringing video to Substack Chat. Record a video on your phone and send it directly to your subscribers. Video in Chat is a way Substack creators can be candid with their community, in a private space they own and control. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebAhJHp3

“The moment we switched to Mux, I started to sleep well.” When we started Mux, one of our core philosophies was that a great dev tool is like art supplies: what kind of amazing products can developers build if they can focus entirely on building amazing, new experiences around video knowing their video infrastructure is taken care of? I'll be completely honest, "helping developers sleep better" was not on my list of goals, but in retrospect, it should have been. Nick Savrov and the Uscreen team took a bet on our Video product early, and growing and scaling together has been such a joy. Here's to another 5+ years of building (and sleeping better). There are a lot of gems in here about building products (video or not), so check out the whole conversation: https://lnkd.in/gAEgQCn5

React Server Components have been riding the Gartner hype cycle. If you're not familiar, the hype cycle is a pattern that all new technologies seem to go through: we get excited thinking the new tech is going to solve all our problems, then we realize that it can't live up to expectations, and finally we find what the tech is truly good for. For the last 18 months, we've been building with Server Components... and for the last 18 months, we've been digging through the rough part of that hype cycle, finding all the ways they're making our lives tough. But then... a month ago, I got to give a talk at React Miami. It was called "React Server Components after the honeymoon". When I submitted the proposal, I thought I was going to write a story about how rough it's been and how tight the cost/benefit trade-off is. As I wrote the talk, though, I realized... Server Components are actually starting to get pretty great! With them, I've been writing impossible new components. I think we've finally climbed the hype cycle's slope of enlightenment and are on our way to the plateau of productivity. I'm bummed that there's no recording of the talk... but I did write a blog post about this all! Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gbFXmc-i

📹 Handling videos via Mux in DatoCMS? Got really annoying back-and-forth workflows to manually create, edit, update, and purge .srt files to get subtitles? Well, you can save yourself the trouble and just auto-generate them now 💅 When uploading videos into DatoCMS, we'll give you the option to generate subs right away, so you don't have to. *Of course, if you actually do have subtitle and audio files, you can always attach those in too. Head over to the "Additional audio tracks and subtitles" section to upload both alternate audio tracks (in M4A, MP3, or WAV) and subtitles (in SRT or VTT). For deets and limitations, check out the docs: https://lnkd.in/eQsFHgm2
