Did you know that more than 1 in 4 people age 65 years or older fall each year? Join NIA, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) on Monday for an expert Q&A on falls prevention and older adults. This event will explore why preventing falls is important, the common causes, recent research, community resources, and more. A large-scale study from six countries found that the likelihood of hospitalization, treatment, and death by heart attack is not the same for men and women. NIA-funded scientists examined whether sex differences in older adults hospitalized for a heart attack were consistent across the United States, Canada, England, Netherlands, Taiwan, and Israel. They found that men are more likely to be hospitalized for a heart attack, while hospitalized women are less likely to receive treatment and are more likely to die from severe heart attack. NIA has always been committed to open science principles to accelerate dementia research. As part of that pledge, NIA is excited to announce that trial data and biosamples from the pivotal Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer’s (A4) Study are now available to download and explore! The A4 study was a multisite trial that tested if the investigational anti-amyloid drug solanezumab would slow cognitive decline in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s. Over 1,500 requests for the data have been approved! Learn more about this resource from the NIA blog: https://lnkd.in/ekNFHYsP #NIABlog #NIHAging #CognitiveDecline #Alzheimers

Biomarkers are measurable indicators of what’s happening in the body. They can be used to diagnose diseases, monitor responses to medications, and more. NIA funding helped support the initial development of the PrecivityAD™ blood test, a commercially available tool for detecting beta-amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. “I was first introduced to the field of aging research when I worked as a Lab Technician at the Tufts Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston. I assisted on multiple studies related to physical function, resistance training, and the effects exercise and nutrition can have on the human body. I also helped on studies that looked at the effects of exercise and nutrition on protein synthesis, weight loss, lipid metabolism, and other physiologic markers in older individuals. This was my first job after undergraduate studies, and as a former college athlete who only focused on exercise in terms of performance and at high intensities, this was an eye-opening experience to see that people who were sedentary for most of their lives could benefit from exercise. This piqued my interest in pursuing advance degrees in exercise physiology with the goal of promoting physical activity as a therapeutic tool to combat most of the chronic metabolic conditions that is usually observed in older individuals.” — Lyndon Joseph, Ph.D., Health Scientist Administrator and Program Officer, Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology, NIA Have you been thinking about a career in aging research?
