Unsheltered homelessness is a national crisis, impacting cities, towns and villages of all sizes and geographic regions. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) annual Point-in-Time Count for 2023 marked the highest number of people reported as experiencing homelessness on a single night – 650,000. Join NLC and Pallet Shelter for a webinar on Sept. 12 at 1 PM ET to learn how cities like Denver, CO have addressed unsheltered homelessness with urgency. These practices have integrated cross-sectoral collaboration and community engagement into an interdepartmental city strategy that has generated positive outcomes. Develop the tools to innovate strategies in your city, town or village, and safely move unhoused people off the streets and into dignified spaces with wrap-around care. “This has really been an incredible partnership between mayors, the National League of Cities and the Department of Labor where we’ve come together to answer this question: How do we make sure that everybody can get a good job, a good job that lifts them out of poverty, a good job that gives them real opportunity, a good job that gives their family security and uplifts their community?” We caught up with Acting Secretary Julie Su to reflect on the #GoodJobsGreatCities Academy. This is a partnership between NLC and the U.S. Department of Labor, where a group of diverse cities were united in their commitment to developing and promoting job quality in their communities. Recent studies show that residents lack confidence in their ability to recycle, find it confusing and question its impact. Fear not! We invite you to download the Recycle Right Toolkit, brought to you by NLC and WM (formerly Waste Management). ♻️ This toolkit, created as part of the Recycle Right Campaign, is designed to be an approachable, open-source, “plug-and-play” guide for municipal leaders to help residents overcome their lack of confidence in recycling by supporting and encouraging proper recycling practices. Download the toolkit now at https://bit.ly/4g1OJdL.

Mt. Rainier, Maryland, we love you! Yesterday, NLC visited the City of Mount Rainier as part of our Centennial Roadshow. It’s the first city in Maryland to greet you right as you leave D.C. – but that’s not the only thing special about it! The city also: 🔨 Has tons of exciting projects in the works, including a new City Hall and an arts center for people with disabilities 🌳 Is committed to environmental innovation! There are multiple rain gardens throughout the city, and Mt. Rainier has the first net zero homes in the county ✏️ Transformed the entrance of Mt. Rainier Elementary School, removing asphalt and implementing an outdoor learning space for students, featuring raised bed gardens and a monarch butterfly garden 🎨 Utilized its Arts Commission to create stunning artwork on buildings in the city Mayor Celina Benitez also gave NLC a shoutout for their training and support that led to a $9.7 million grant from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program! Thanks to this grant, the city – which prioritizes walkability – was able to implement stronger accessibility and make Mt. Rainier a safer place for pedestrians. Thanks again to Mt. Rainier for the outstanding tour! Head to nlc100.org/roadshow to follow our journey as we visit 100 cities in celebration of NLC’s century of strengthening cities! #NLC100
