About us

The National Deaf Children's Society was founded in London on 15 December 1944 by a handful of parents of deaf children concerned about the impact of the 1944 Education Act on their schooling. Established as the Society of St. John of Beverley, its objective was 'to further in every way possible the provision of full modern education for all deaf children in England, as originally accorded to hearing children'. It was renamed The Deaf Children's Society in 1945, before assuming its more familiar name of The National Deaf Children's Society during the 1950s. • “The National Deaf Children’s Society gave us reassurance that deaf children can do anything. That’s why this survey is so close to my heart.” 💜 We’re on a mission to find out the most important questions that need to be answered about childhood deafness, and we need your help! We’re asking deaf young people aged 16 to 25, parents and professionals to share their insights in a short, five-minute survey. And for deaf children under 16, they can join in too with the help of a parent or carer. Juliet, who is a parent of a deaf child and part of the project team’s steering group, shares why taking part in this survey is so vital. Ready to make a difference? • “The support from the National Deaf Children’s Society empowered me to make informed decisions about Finnley's hearing aids, educating his sisters, supporting our family, and caring for myself.” Parenting a deaf child can sometimes bring additional challenges, such as coming to terms with a diagnosis or fighting to get the right support. While it’s vital to support deaf children through these experiences, it's important to recognise that these things can also take their toll on parents and carers. For #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, Michelle shares the emotional impact of her son’s diagnosis of unilateral hearing loss, and why she's taking part in our 50K in May fundraising challenge: “The National Deaf Children’s Society was introduced to us alongside Finnley's diagnosis. When I reached out to them for advice, they were incredibly patient, kind, and attentive. Everyone at the charity assured me that it was okay to feel upset about Finnley's condition and provided a safe space for me to share my feelings. “I felt immense sadness for not recognising Finnley’s struggles earlier and harboured guilt for feeling so distraught when he does have one functioning ear. It led me to withdraw from social activities and isolate myself at home. “When I heard about the National Deaf Children’s Society’s 50K in May challenge, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to give back to the charity for the invaluable support they provided. I am forever grateful for their assistance during those initial challenging months, which I consider a lifeline for parents. “Participating in the 50K in May has motivated me and my children to spend time outdoors together. With Finnley now equipped with his hearing aids, I find solace in being able to communicate with him effortlessly. His newfound ability to enjoy the simple pleasures, like hearing birdsong, fills me with joy.” Walk, jog, run or wheel 50 kilometres this May and raise vital funds for deaf children across the UK. You can take part as a group, with your family, friends, colleagues or on your own! Every kilometre you complete will help bring us closer to a world without barriers for deaf children.
