Happy Flag day! On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. Today, Americans honor the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades and other patriotic observances. #NICoE #DefenseIntrepidNetwork #DIN #DOD #DHA #TBI #Brainhealth

Improving the lives of patients and families impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI) through excellence and innovation
About us
The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), a member of the Defense Intrepid Network for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Brain Health and a directorate of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, is dedicated to improving the lives of service members and families affected by TBI and psychological health through innovative research and transformation. The Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health (DI Network) includes the NICoE and Intrepid Spirit Centers (ISCs) who collaborate closely with partners across the Department of Defense, Military Health System (MHS), federal government, academia, and other public and private industries. This network supports the MHS’ TBI Pathway of Care, which makes sure patients have a point of entry to the care system; a clear path through diagnosis, treatment, and reintegration; and consistent access to high quality TBI treatment and research. Serving as a research hub, the NICoE uses the most current, high-tech clinical resources to advance medical science in TBI and psychological health. Since its founding in 2010, the NICoE has served as an authority in TBI care, research, education, and transformation by establishing a patient-focused interdisciplinary care model, providing support and best practices for the developing DI Network, establishing firm foundational research to improve TBI care, and developing the TBI Portal—now the Defense Health Agency’s enterprise application for TBI—to synchronize clinical care. To enhance the holistic care model offered by the Defense Intrepid network, the Intrepid Spirit Center at Fort Cavazos established an efficient and streamlined 360-assessment approach for patients with TBI and associated sequelae. This model focuses on seven initial specialty evaluations including medical, behavioral health, physical therapy, neuro-optometry, speech-language pathology, pain management and occupational therapy. The 360 evaluation helps the team provide simultaneous, individualized, synchronized and coordinated care in a manner that helps reduce the typical patient’s length of stay. The IOP runs seven times a year and to date has graduated 504 active-duty service members. #NICoE #DefenseIntrepidNetwork #DIN #DOD #DHA #TBI #Brainhealth

Multi-Site Research Collaboration - Concussion Assessment, Research and Education/Service Academy Long Term Observation Study Integration - The CARE/SALTOS Integrated (CSI) Study, funded by CDMRP, is a public-private partnership designed to address key knowledge gaps around clinical and neurobiological recovery, brain structure and function and factors predicting outcomes in Military Service Academy graduates and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes. The CARE data collected to date represents the most diverse concussion data of its type ever collected and allows for analysis of groups often neglected in medical literature. The CARE SALTOS study will continue to be overseen by the NCAA/DoD Grand Alliance to yield detailed, longitudinal follow-up evaluations of service members to address critical questions surrounding long-term effects of mTBI and/or head impact exposure on warfighter brain health. Study sites are WRNMMC, USUHS, Fort Cavazos, Fort Liberty and Joint Base Lewis-McChord Traumatic Brain Injury.
