  • Health inequalities mean that people’s general health and life expectancy can be very different depending on where they live and work, their education, access to services, the local environment, among lots of other factors. Tackling health inequalities is part of our long-term strategy, and to help achieve that we have funded 30 Health Determinants Research Collaborations (HDRCs) across the UK. Led by local authorities working closely with universities and community organisations, HDRCs will embed a culture of research and evidence-informed decision-making to help improve health outcomes in previously under-served areas of the UK. HDRCs bring together local government knowledge and research skills from the academic community. Councils know their local populations better than anyone - and HDRCs enable them to focus research on tackling the public health challenges that affect their communities. 📋 HDRCs will boost research capacity and capability of Local Authorities in areas where it's most needed 📋 HDRCs will involve and engage their communities in innovative, targeted research to understand how wider determinants impact on health and health inequalities 📋 HDRCs will serve as nationally recognised centres of excellence, boosting local government’s ability to tackle the challenges presented by local health determinants Find out more about the strategy and ambitions behind HDRCs in our short video ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eQHAAGnZ #PublicHealthResearch #PublicHealth #HealthInequalities

  • Could you lead research that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of women? Historically the health and care system has used a ‘male as default’ approach, leading to gaps in our data and evidence base. This means that not enough is known about conditions that only affect women, for example menopause, endometriosis or other gynaecological conditions. It has also meant that not enough is known about how conditions that affect both men and women impact them in different ways. Research into the health and wellbeing of women is an area of continuing priority to us and we are keen to fill the gaps in our portfolio. Our research funding opportunity is the latest of a number of opportunities to focus on women’s health. Find out more details and how to apply for funding on our website: https://lnkd.in/eBH2VEuJ

  • Liver disease mortality has increased by over 250% since 1971, during a time when deaths from other major causes of premature mortality (such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease) have all reduced. We are therefore looking to provide research funding for high quality proposals that will address important evidence gaps in liver disease research. Find out more and apply: https://lnkd.in/dmuU3WA6

  • Care for someone experiencing a mental health crisis can mean the difference between living and dying. But there are many different models of care and the resulting complex web can be difficult to navigate. Learn about the latest NIHR research on mental health crises, including: ❔ What works in community crisis care? ❔ How do acute day units help? ❔ Can peer-support reduce readmission to acute care? 📰 Innovative research in Greater Manchester is investigating if a portable, pacemaker-like device could significantly improve life for the more than 36,500 people in the UK every year left with permanent arm weakness after a stroke – a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. In Manchester, the TRICEPS study is being led by Leanne Calcutt Specialist Stroke Physiotherapist, from Manchester Local Care Organisation’s South Manchester Community Stroke Team, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust . TRICEPS aims to learn if stimulating a nerve, called the vagus nerve, through the ear, using the wearable device, whilst moving the weak arm can help to improve arm recovery. The study is funded by a partnership between the Medical Research Council and the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research). Stephen is the first participant in the North West recruited to the TRICEPS study 👇 https://lnkd.in/eRC-qrBq

  • For more than three decades, our Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme has been funding life-saving research and identifying opportunities to save the NHS millions of pounds. We’ve created a short video to celebrate 30 years of our Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme! The video demonstrates the importance of NIHR research to the whole nation and is now available to watch on our YouTube channel. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/erPh6C4f
