3D drug printing offers many new possibilities from chocolate flavored pills for children who dislike taking medicine to drugs printed at your local pharmacy. How does the 3D drug printing process work? 💊 Step 1: prepare the receptacle tray (where the drug capsules are placed) 💊 Step 2: fill inkjet print heads with the drug in liquid form 💊 Step 3: print the drugs 💊 Step 4: seal the capsules Learn more about NIST’s work in this area: https://lnkd.in/dV9bvWDe #Medicine #3DPrinting #Drugs #Bioscience

Measure. Innovate. Lead.
About us
We are the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. For more than a century, NIST has helped to keep U.S. technology at the leading edge. Our measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. For more than a decade, scientists have made extraordinary progress on the long-held dream of fabricating an entire cell from nonliving molecules and materials. Such synthetic (or “engineered”) cells would behave similarly to the ones in our bodies, though they would also have built-in safeguards. By studying them, we could increase our understanding of the rules of life. They could also be used to manipulate living organisms and achieve astounding breakthroughs in medicine and science. Guidance documents, a plan for global engagement on standards, and new testing software all meet directives required of NIST by last year’s Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence. Two of the products are being released for the first time, while the third are finalized versions of guidance NIST released in draft form earlier this year. Public comments on the first release, which concerns the evaluation of dual-use foundation models, are due by Sept. 9, 2024. Delivered right to your newsfeed, get a roundup of our Tech Beat e-newsletter content on LinkedIn! Hemp and marijuana both come from the cannabis plant, with the main difference being the proportion of the psychoactive compound THC they contain. These two cannabis products have different uses as well as different legal status in federal and state laws. Our new hemp reference material will, among other things, help producers and regulators ensure that these cannabis products are accurately labeled. As the market for cannabis products is growing, NIST is doing a lot of work on them, including measuring THC in the breath of cannabis smokers and helping labs distinguish between hemp and marijuana, as well as measuring the THC and CBD compounds in these products. #ScienceAndTechnology #Science #Technology #Newsletter

Ever wonder how we make sure ultraviolet (UV) light is strong enough to kill germs but not overly strong and cause damage to the items being sterilized? NIST's newly rebuilt UV calibration facility helps ensure that UV detectors across the country are accurately measuring light we can't even see. From keeping our drinking water clean to battling healthcare-associated infections, precise UV measurements are more important than ever.
