OCLC's latest position paper highlights a linked data strategy for improved library catalogs today and more connected information in the long term. If you're new to the subject and why it's important, this is a good place to start. The brief, 12-page paper articulates the value that linked data can bring to library catalogs, and the tools already available to help ease libraries into creating a more interconnected experience for information seekers. It follows OCLC's path from decades of linked data research, to experiments and prototypes, the creation of more than 150 million WorldCat Entities, and, most recently, to the web application and APIs now available through OCLC Meridian that libraries can use to get started. ⤵️ Click below to read more. #OCLCnews --- #OCLC #OCLCmeridian #OCLCworldcat #LinkedData #Metadata #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #AcademicLibrary #AcademicLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibraryLove #LibrariesOfInstagram #LibrariansOfInstagram #ILoveLibraries #LibrariesTransform

#EngagedLibraries help keep cyclists on two wheels. 🚴 Hopping on a bike is a great way to get around town, build fitness, and have fun. And Billings Public Library is working to make cycling more accessible to its community members with the unveiling of its brand-new bike repair station. Visitors to the bike repair station can add air to their tires and perform basic bike repairs. The library even offers bike locks on loan for those who don’t have one. 📲 We want to know how your library supports initiatives to make bicycling more accessible. Share your story on social media by including #EngagedLibraries and tagging OCLC in your post. You could be featured in an upcoming issue of Abstracts, on our community engagement hub, in an upcoming blog or video, or across our social media channels. ⤵️ Click below to see photos from Billings' bike repair station. --- #OCLC #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #AcademicLibrary #AcademicLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibraryLove

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries at Vanderbilt University have strengthened their commitment to innovation and collaborative scholarship by joining the OCLC Research Library Partnership. “By embracing new technologies and fostering collaboration across disciplines, our libraries are enabling scholars to push the boundaries of inquiry and discovery,” said Vanderbilt University Librarian Jon Shaw. “This partnership with the OCLC will advance those efforts even further as we engage with its global network and collaborate in developing leading-edge practices that are redefining research libraries in the 21st century.” A multinational community of research libraries, the OCLC RLP is dedicated to improving library practice through professional development, collaborative research, and information sharing. The RLP supports focused programming and research in four areas crucial to research libraries – research support, unique and distinctive collections, resource sharing, and next generation metadata. Across these four areas, the RLP seeks to support libraries through the challenges of a disrupted workplace and to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. The RLP currently comprises 124 Partner institutions around the world. ⤵️ Click below to learn more. #OCLCresearch --- #OCLC #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #AcademicLibrary #AcademicLibraries #ResearchLibrary #ResearchLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibraryLove

The community-informed Reimagine Descriptive Workflows project and resulting report was an opportunity for OCLC to reflect on our own role in repairing systems and workflows. During the development of OCLC’s linked data ecosystem, the WorldCat ontology, our teams conducted an internal diversity, equity, and inclusion review of the ontology prior to release. #OCLCresearch's Merrilee Proffitt reviews how our teams across the organization came together with library professionals to "dream and enact change." "As a result of this process, OCLC is making improvements to the WorldCat ontology," Merrilee writes. "This effort, working in community to ensure that the WorldCat ontology shifts away from systems and structures that were developed during the nineteenth century, demonstrates that this work is complex, nuanced—and worth undertaking." ⤵️ Click below to read more in this #HangingTogether blog. --- #OCLC #PublicLibrary #PublicLibraries #AcademicLibrary #AcademicLibraries #Library #Libraries #Librarian #Librarians #LibraryLife #LibraryLove

#EngagedLibraries celebrate science learning beyond the eclipse. 🚀🌙 At Atlanta Texas Public Library, a unique collaboration is underway—the growth of a “Moon Tree” that began its journey as a seedling aboard NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Orion spacecraft. The NASA STEM Artemis Moon Tree program recently invited libraries, schools, and other education groups to apply to be moon tree stewards. Atlanta Public Library was chosen to receive a sweet gum tree that will be planted on the library grounds. The library will also host programs that celebrate the Moon Tree, space exploration, and conservation. In this new article from OCLC’s WebJunction, learn how libraries across North America helped their communities celebrate the recent eclipse, and how they’re building on that excitement with ongoing offerings. 📲 We want to hear how your library builds excitement about space exploration, conservation, and all things STEM. Share your story on social media by including #EngagedLibraries and tagging OCLC in your post.
