Thanks to everyone who attended yesterday's "𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴". There were a lot of questions, so here are some thoughts:
Q: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁?
A: Try social media. Post regular content in your specialist area, and see what gets the most response. That's likely to be a topic that resonates with your audience.
Q: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴?
A: Structure it around problems. If each section of your writing either describes or solves a problem, your reader will have a reason to care.
Q: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰?
A: Use Aristotle's 3 "Modes of Persuasion": factual ideas (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, How Much), emotional ideas (Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Joy, Fear, Surprise), and behaviorial ideas (Political, Economic, Sociological, Technological)
Q: 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆?
A: Open a chatbot and type "Give me 10 emotional ideas about <topic>" and hit return
Q: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽?
A: If you capture ideas in a text file, your brain will give undue prominence to the first and last ideas in the list. A mindmap is unordered. Also when you start to create a mindmap, you will start to see connections between ideas and spot themes. This will spark new ideas.
Q: 𝗜𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀? 𝗢𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲?
A: Paper is generally better. Paper mindmaps are limited in size, allowing you to take in all of the ideas you have written down at once. Digital mindmaps are an on infinite sheet of paper, and you will generally not be able to read the whole thing. Plus, paper mindmaps are slower to create, and that means you think more when you create them.
Q: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀?
A: Read anything by Tony Buzan, or watch his old TV series from the 1970s: "Use Your Head" https://lnkd.in/dgHChqup
Q: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟰 𝗗𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗼 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀?
A: Get ideas (bones), add motivation to them (muscles), trim them down (reduce fat), and convert them to body text (add skin)

Another huge honor for Nathan Toups and I on the Book Overflow podcast! Neal Ford was kind enough to join us to discuss his book "Fundamentals of Software Architecture." Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gvieWacX
I worked hard on this report for O'Reilly. I provide direction and tips on how to upskill effectively in AI proficiency, and advocate a problem-first approach where possible.
I also provide an honest appraisal of pitfalls like p-hacking and misaligned incentives in the AI space, and the erosion of the definition of AI. These pitfalls need awareness as they impact what we learn and whether it produces value.
