"I believe that the key #AI milestones will involve achieving community and regulatory acceptance of these innovative methods - and we’re absolutely seeing progress in this area." - Andy Wilson, Head of Innovative RWD Analytics at Parexel In the latest from our #AIandMe series reviewing how AI is reshaping everyday work in clinical research, Andy shared his and other's excitement around AI capabilities, specifically causal methods and advancements, while noting some occasional misunderstandings and limitations. "In the near term, AI and ML are being used to identify eligible patients, expedite literature reviews, and improve trial efficiency. In the longer term, AI and ML could be used to integrate real-world data into trials, reduce trial duration, and minimize the number of patients allocated to control arms." The latter is where Andy is focused in leveraging AI at the service of established causal methods. "One of the emerging frontiers in using methods like targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) methods is the ability to estimate effects in increasingly complex real-world scenarios." Andy shared how generative models can be used to create "what if" scenarios that help us better understand and anticipate patient outcomes as an extension of established data methods, while eliminating privacy and security concerns. Concluding with a quote from Pablo Picasso, "Computers are useless; they only give you answers." Andy finds this sentiment reflects a broader issue in our expectations of AI when we seek solutions without clearly defining the problem it should address. He's excited by the movement toward more 'collaborative learning' where data engineers can work in lockstep with the clinical experts implementing findings, rather than siloed from each other. Parexel today announced the strengthening of its Real World Research (RWR) offering, bringing together the company’s Scientific Data Organization (SDO) and Real World Evidence (RWE) capabilities to better meet growing customer needs. This strategic alignment will more effectively leverage Parexel’s novel study design and methodology for primary site-based and secondary data/non-site-based real world research to offer customers best-in-class evidence generation solutions.   To lead this growing area of focus, Parexel has appointed Mike D'Ambrosio as Senior Vice President, Global Head, Real World Research. Mike will lead strategic initiatives to enhance customer engagement and delivery across Real World Data (RWD) and RWE services, helping to foster a deeper understanding of patient experiences and outcomes to ensure safety and efficacy in the drug development process.
