What makes the hellbender North America’s most captivating salamander? Join Dr. Monika Bohm and guest host/producer Kelly Griese as they unravel this mystery with humor and keen insights. You’ll laugh along as we talk about quirky hellbender names and hear from Nicholas Burgmeier, a wildlife specialist from Purdue University, who gives us the lowdown on these unique amphibians. Nick helps us understand the challenges facing these cute-in-their-own-way creatures. From habitat degradation and agricultural runoff, hellbenders face an upstream swim for survival, but powerful partnerships are helping to protect and grow hellbender populations. Learn about the zoos, conservationists, farmers and landowners coming together to ensure a bright future for the “snot otter.” We’ll also share information about how YOU can contribute to hellbender conservation. You can listen to Protect Species wherever you get your podcasts or by visiting our website, www.ProtectSpecies.com. As usual, if you like what you hear, we'd love for you to share the show with your friends or leave us a review. #Podcast #Conservation #Hellbender #Salamander #Amphibian

BIG news for small species. We're thrilled to welcome Alpenzoo Innsbruck to the IUCN Species Survival Commission network of Centers for Species Survival. Alpenzoo in Austria will focus on small mammals and support the work of the IUCN SSC Small Mammal Specialist Group. https://lnkd.in/gqTfC9Ai #Conservation #SmallMammals

We're thrilled to see our Global Center for Species Survival Invertebrate Conservation Coordinator, Dr. Sérgio Henriques, quoted in a new BBC Wildlife Magazine article about fireflies. The latest IUCN Red List of Threatened Species update includes assessments for 14 more firefly species, meaning there are now a total of 150 assessed species. Globally, there are more than 2,200 firefly species known to science, according to the IUCN Species Survival Commission's Firefly Specialist Group. At least 400 of those Lampyridae beetles are from Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. The Firefly Specialist Group says climate change's impact on mangroves is one of the biggest threats facing synchronous fireflies in Southeast Asia. These fireflies put on spectacular light shows, drawing tourists from around the world. Additionally, European glow-worm and firefly species are in decline due to habitat loss, light and chemical pollution, and climate change. Around 65 Lampyridae species are found in Europe, and half are threatened with extinction. You can learn more about fireflies and their conservation from the Firefly Specialist Group's co-chair, Dr. Sara Lewis. https://lnkd.in/gRjsVpJx #fireflies #conservation #IUCNRedList
