Using the student voice to improve higher education.

About us

Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) are a suite of government endorsed surveys for higher education, across the student life cycle from commencement to employment. QILT makes available robust, nationally consistent performance data for Australian higher education, helping drive quality improvement. Student Experience Survey (SES) - The SES is the only comprehensive survey of current higher education students in Australia. The survey collects information that helps both higher education institutions and the government improve teaching and learning outcomes. Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) - The GOS is completed by graduates of Australian higher education institutions approximately four to six months after completing their studies. Graduate Outcomes Survey - Longitudinal (GOS-L) - The GOS-L is completed by graduates of Australian higher education institutions approximately three years after completing their studies. Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS) - The ESS is the only national survey that measures the extent to which higher education institutions in Australia are preparing graduates to meet employer needs. The ComparED website is built on QILT data from the SES and GOS. The information available on the ComparED website is intended to help users make informed decisions about their future study options.

It's always an interesting Friday night read to see where Australia's university graduates are employed, with the latest Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) results released by QILT earlier this week. Overall, it shows strong rates of employment, including for STEM degrees. It’s a pretty positive story overall: on the big indicator (% of people graduating from undergrad degrees who are in full time work) the figure in 2023 is 79% - 10 percentage points up on 2020 and 2021, and seven to nine percentage points up on the period 2016-19. In the STEM context, full-time employment rates post undergraduate studies is strongest for engineering degree at 89.2%, compared to 69.8% and 74.4% for science and mathematics and computer and information systems respectively. Compared to 79% for all fields of study. - Low rates for science and mathematics is in part due to over 35% of graduates going on to further study compared to 18% for all other fields of study. Somewhat of a concern is the rate of self-reporting of poor utilisation skills being 39.5% in science and mathematics degrees, although this is low at 20.9% and 27.8% for engineering and computer and information systems, respectively. While this reporting varies across all degrees, with the lowest rates in health-related degrees, across all degrees the rate is 27.8%. Overall, while there are improvements to be made, this is a positive endorsement of Australia’s higher education system. I look forward to seeing the outcome of the work of Jobs and Skills Australia in developing National Skills Taxonomy to develop a shared skills vocabulary between employers, education providers, and workers. This should help match science and mathematics education and graduates to job shortages. - If you are interested, there is still time to complete the online survey for this taxonomy work - it closes Tuesday next week, 5 June. This data masks significant variations across universities, with almost one in three graduates from some #australianuniversities failing to secure a job. Through its innovative partnership Hiration - a leading applied AI company - Academy Xi is now offering an AI Career Coach (https://lnkd.in/gjcrECh8) for tertiary education providers in Australia. Want a good job, good pay and a happy boss? Do an Arts degree. The latest QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey shows humanities, arts and social sciences graduates continue to enjoy outstanding outcomes. Employers rate humanities, arts and social sciences graduates’ foundational, adaptive, collaborative, employment and technical skills as consistently above average. Meanwhile humanities, culture and social sciences students reported 79.1 per cent were satisfied with the overall education experience compared with the average of 75.9 per cent. The vast majority of humanities, arts and social sciences graduates are in full-time employment three years after graduating. Around 90 per cent of graduates are in jobs by then and employment outcomes across the creative arts, communications, and humanities, culture and social sciences are up around 30 per cent from 2020. Earnings for humanities, culture and social sciences graduates remain steady at around $82,000 three years after graduating. This is on par with the wider university average of $83,500. More graduates of the arts, social sciences and humanities go into management roles than the average graduate. Around 11 per cent of communications and creative arts graduates go into management roles compared with the national average of 7.8 per cent. The results paint a picture of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences students who are highly satisfied with their studies moving into well paid and rewarding careers where their employers appreciate their independence, critical thinking, adaptability and ability to communicate. This is wonderful news for the cohort of students that is commencing their studies in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences across the country.”  You can read President Nick Bisley's full statement here: https://lnkd.in/gqRK_X2F
