#SuicidePreventionMonth PSA 🗣️ Talking about suicidal thoughts doesn't increase the risks. It can actually be the first step toward getting help. If you are struggling, don't wait to reach out. Whether it's to someone close to you, a trained mental health provider, or the 988 Lifeline (available for free 24/7/365), support is always there. If it is an emergency, call 911 right away. If someone confides in you about suicidal thoughts, remember the ACE (Ask, Care, Escort) approach.
💬 Ask. Be direct and ask questions like “have you thought about harming yourself or want to die by suicide?” or “Do you have a plan?” 💚 Care. Listen without judgment and show compassion. Let them know that they are not alone. 🤝 Escort. If they are at risk, help them connect to the 988 Lifeline or a professional. If it’s an emergency, call 911 immediately. You can make a difference—speaking up can save lives.

When it comes to #DEIB and #allyship, training is just the beginning. Karishma Patel Buford, Spring Health’s Chief People Officer, recently had the opportunity to sit down with Sacha Thompson, MBA, MEd, ACC, host of DEI After 5, to discuss how our organization implements actionable allyship training—building awareness, looking in the mirror, and coming from a place of deep empathy. 🌿 “So much of the divisiveness that’s coming out today, whether it’s social, or political et cetera, is this idea that ‘I’m right, and you’re wrong’ and that there’s only one truth,” Karishma explains. “So much of DEI is the idea that there are multiple truths... but if there is a need to be right and you’re wrong, then we’re not going to progress.” This conversation is full of incredible insights to inspire DEIB initiatives at your organization. #Layoffs are never easy, but managers who lead their teams through tough transitions with empathy, communication, and support can make a big difference. Here are 5 ways #managers can have a positive impact during challenging times: 1. Communicate transparently. Open and honest communication about the reason for layoffs, the decision-making process, and what the future holds can reduce uncertainty and build trust.
 2. Offer emotional support. Managers can acknowledge the emotional impact of layoffs and create a safe space where employees can express their feelings and concerns. 3. Connect employees with resources. Impacted employees may need clarity on severance packages or job placement services. The remaining employees should be informed of changes in roles or expectations.
 4. Monitor workloads. Remaining employees may have more work to do than they did before layoffs. Managers can help employees re-prioritize and re-distribute tasks to help avoid overwhelm or burnout.
 5. (Re)build team morale. After a layoff, your team’s morale may be (understandably!) a little shaky. Managers can foster connection and support by recognizing employee contributions, regularly checking in, and meeting employee needs. Managers are a huge part of your organization’s culture and success. After all, research shows that managers influence employee #mentalhealth more than spouses, doctors, or therapists. 🌿 Are your managers equipped to lead with confidence and empathy? Managers can make or break the employee experience. In her latest for Fast Company, Spring Health Chief People Officer Karishma Patel Buford discussed the importance of investing in your #managers, which can play a pivotal role in employee engagement and organizational success. She shared 4 tips and strategies for managers to not only achieve performance-related outcomes, but to also support employee #mentalhealth. 💚 Identify “heart vs. head” conversations. When someone is looking to discuss something meaningful and emotional, slow down, be intentional, and choose the right medium for the discussion, such as a Zoom meeting rather than a Slack DM. 🚨 Recognize the signs of burnout. These include fatigue, irritability, sadness, and changes in behavior. If an employee exhibits these signs, a manager should encourage them to use internal resources, such as coaching support, digital mental health tools, or an EAP. 🗂️ Assess employee bandwidth. When employees have too much on their plate, they can feel stressed and overwhelmed. Managers can create a prioritization framework to determine which tasks are of critical importance versus what can be removed or delegated. 🤝 Remember managers ≠ therapists. Trying to be a therapist when you don’t have training can be dangerous. Instead, learn to recognize when someone needs more help than you can provide and connect them with mental health resources.
