Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP)

This week, SRP had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from Preferred by Nature and the NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research to the SRP Secretariat Office in Bangkok. Our discussions with Preferred by Nature covered several key areas, including advancing the SRP carbon auditing framework, exploring synergies in regenerative agriculture, and considering potential SRP farm audits in key countries. We also explored training opportunities in Latin America and discussed Preferred by Nature’s participation in the upcoming 3rd Global Sustainable Rice Conference & Exhibition. We were equally delighted to meet with Dr Sekhar Udaya Nagothu Director for International Projects at NIBIO and gain insights into NIBIO’s rice-focused projects around the world. We also explored areas of potential collaboration, including NIBIO joining SRP as a research member. We are excited to continue our engagement with stakeholders across the rice sector and working together through strategic partnerships to drive transformation of global rice sector.

We are excited to share that Dr. Bas Bouman, SRP’s Board Vice-Chair and the International Rice Research Institute's (IRRI) Research Director for Sustainable Impact through Rice-based Systems, has been named one of the inaugural 2024 Top Agri-food Pioneers (TAP) by the World Food Prize Foundation. With a remarkable career spanning over 35 years across Asia, Latin America, and Europe, Dr. Bouman has made significant contributions to agricultural engineering and agroecology. The TAP List honors 38 global innovators from 20 countries who are driving the transformation of global food systems. We are excited to introduce Herbrani Adi Raharjo (Bani), our new Capacity Development Officer. ✨ Bani brings a wealth of experience from his work on vegetable farms and field training in palm oil plantations. Since 2017, he has been an auditor for the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard, covering crops like tea, coffee, cocoa, coconut, banana, chili, pineapple, nutmeg, and pepper across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan. Bani is deeply passionate about supporting farmers and plantations in adopting sustainable practices. In his new role at SRP, he will be instrumental in enhancing our training programs and supporting our national chapter divisions. SRP is excited to have Enora Lewandowski from AniCura/Mars Petcare supporting us with an alignment study on the European Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. Enora has been collaborating with our team since the beginning of August and will continue to do so until the end of the month on this critical compliance review. As SRP enters the third revision cycle for the SRP Standard, this study is both timely and crucial for enhancing SRP's value proposition. By future-proofing the SRP Standard and Assurance Scheme, we aim to support the growing market for SRP-Verified rice in EU Member States and beyond. The Mars Ambassador Program facilitates this collaboration, allowing Mars Associates to leverage their expertise to support partners with aligned community engagement goals.
