Should local news startups, often launching in communities where legacy newspapers have shrunk or shut down, continue the tradition of publishing police logs? My latest story at Boston Globe Media shows how local news startups in Massachusetts are split on whether to publish police blotters — often a log of calls for service, arrests, and incidents — for their audiences. Some have decided to do so, but as part of a broader rethinking of crime coverage have decided to omit suspects' names and other details. But others have made the conscious decision not to publish logs out of the belief that they elevate unchallenged police accounts and could distort the understanding of a community's level of crime. https://lnkd.in/eZ_6Np-M
