Smart Giving Simplified

About us

We are a community of people who believe in taking action. Our role is to help you make the most effective donations possible in the fight against extreme poverty. Since our founding in 2013, we have compiled a list of research-backed charities working on interventions against the multidimensional factors of poverty, resulting in over $100 million donated to high-impact charities. Our Story: Founded in 2013 by philosopher Peter Singer and former executive Charlie Bresler, our own history demonstrates how one person asking themselves what their individual impact can be led to positive transformation for millions of people impacted by extreme poverty. Our story begins when Charlie Bresler asked himself if and how he could make a difference in the world. A psychologist and business executive, Charlie was not a career politician or cultural influencer; but rather just a person who wanted to do something about economic inequality. Charlie picked up a copy of Peter Singer’s The Life You Can Save. Peter was a Princeton-based philosopher at the time and had written the book with the aim of encouraging everyday people to consider their moral obligation to help people living in extreme poverty. In 2013, Charlie reached out to Peter via email and prop We provide tools that make it easy for people to make smart, cost-effective and highly impactful donations. These include a curated list of evidence-based charities, a tool to help you calculate your annual recommended donation amount, and a calculator that helps donors see how far their dollars can go in the developing world. Every year, childhood vaccines prevent an estimated 4-5 million deaths, making them one of the most cost-effective health interventions in low-income countries. New Incentives, our recommended nonprofit, addresses this challenge by educating caregivers about the importance of vaccinations and providing conditional cash transfers. With the help of New Incentives, Hauwa can now access vaccinations closer to home and use the cash incentives to support her family. Donate today to New Incentives to help more families like Hauwa’s and save lives through essential vaccinations: https://lnkd.in/dyG-X6Sd

Our latest episode of #Philanthropod has just gone live! 🌏 🎧 In this episode, host Anubha Rawat sits down with Safeena Husain, the visionary founder of Educate Girls —a non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that every girl in the most remote parts of India is enrolled in school and learns well. Safeena shares her remarkable journey: from growing up in Delhi under challenging circumstances, which interrupted her own education, to spending 10 years abroad, and finally to returning to India to start Educate Girls. Anubha, who also grew up in India, brings a deep understanding of the cultural barriers girls face in accessing education, making this a compelling conversation. They explore the innovative community mobilisation strategies behind Educate Girls' success, including the creation of a network of 20,000 local gender champions. They also discuss the critical role of engaging boys and men in the mission, breaking down biases, and fostering a community-driven model that emphasises ownership and responsibility. Safeena explains how philanthropy has been the 'fuel' driving the organisation forward. She highlights the importance of unrestricted, flexible capital, which has been instrumental in enabling large-scale impact. Now, Educate Girls is looking to the future with an ambitious vision: the "10x10" initiative—educating 10 million girls over the next 10 years. ❗ We are also pleased that Safeena will be a guest at two AIDN events next week in Melbourne and Sydney. Last year, a few members of our team visited Uganda and Rwanda to capture some incredible stories of lives transformed by effective giving. During this trip, we had the opportunity to meet Anthony Kalulu, an inspiring sorghum farmer in Uganda who is working to empower the rural poor in the remotest areas of eastern Uganda. Our updated version of You Don’t Have to be Brave to Save Lives features the story of Anthony’s niece Gertrude. Whether you are brave or not, you can join us in this effort to help reduce suffering, save lives and empower livelihoods of people living in extreme poverty.

Doctor in Australia giving 10% of my income to effective charities forever 🔶. I gave 50% in my first year working. henryach.com

Another meeting of the Melbourne The Life You Can Save meetup group at Fluffy Torpedo - Fine Ice Cream in Fitzroy (they give 50% of profits to charity, astoundingly). A joy to have Prof Peter Singer along. I was in year 11 when I first came across Peter's arguments for directing our resources to the world's poor through effective charity and his arguments against factory farming. It had quite an influence on me.
