Every year, childhood vaccines prevent an estimated 4-5 million deaths, making them one of the most cost-effective health interventions in low-income countries. Safeena shares her remarkable journey: from growing up in Delhi under challenging circumstances, which interrupted her own education, to spending 10 years abroad, and finally to returning to India to start Educate Girls. Anubha, who also grew up in India, brings a deep understanding of the cultural barriers girls face in accessing education, making this a compelling conversation. They explore the innovative community mobilisation strategies behind Educate Girls' success, including the creation of a network of 20,000 local gender champions. They also discuss the critical role of engaging boys and men in the mission, breaking down biases, and fostering a community-driven model that emphasises ownership and responsibility. Safeena explains how philanthropy has been the 'fuel' driving the organisation forward. She highlights the importance of unrestricted, flexible capital, which has been instrumental in enabling large-scale impact. Last year, a few members of our team visited Uganda and Rwanda to capture some incredible stories of lives transformed by effective giving. During this trip, we had the opportunity to meet Anthony Kalulu, an inspiring sorghum farmer in Uganda who is working to empower the rural poor in the remotest areas of eastern Uganda. Our updated version of You Don’t Have to be Brave to Save Lives features the story of Anthony’s niece Gertrude. Whether you are brave or not, you can join us in this effort to help reduce suffering, save lives and empower livelihoods of people living in extreme poverty.

Another meeting of the Melbourne The Life You Can Save meetup group at Fluffy Torpedo - Fine Ice Cream in Fitzroy (they give 50% of profits to charity, astoundingly). A joy to have Prof Peter Singer along. I was in year 11 when I first came across Peter's arguments for directing our resources to the world's poor through effective charity and his arguments against factory farming. It had quite an influence on me.

Suzan Anga fled civil war in South Sudan to find refuge in Uganda's Rhino camp with her family. Living on handouts, she transformed her life with support from Village Enterprise. Selected for the program in 2022, Suzan attended financial literacy and entrepreneurship trainings. With her group, "BLESSING Business Group," she ventured into retail and agriculture.
