What happens after a crisis team responds to someone facing a mental health or substance use emergency? New Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute research shows many communities have few options to connect people to same-day treatment or long-term care. Our @Julie Wertheimer breaks down 6 ways cities and counties can help turn the tide. https://pew.org/3YoDcij

🌿 Exciting news from Western Australia! The Nanda Traditional Owners are celebrating the joint management and creation of new national parks in Western Australia. This initiative highlights the growing role of Indigenous communities in overseeing their traditional lands, which not only holds significant conservation value but also provides economic development opportunities and strengthens cultural heritage. I’m looking forward to visiting Australia in September. I will be undertaking on-the-ground site visits to learn more about these strides forward. #IndigenousLeadership #Conservation #EconomicDevelopment #CulturalHeritage #SustainableFuture #PewTrusts

Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest have maintained clam gardens for over 3,500 years—and this ancient practice is providing marine scientists with helpful lessons to improve modern-day sea garden management. "On the science side, our role is to better understand the ecological mechanisms in traditional teachings," says Marco Hatch, marine scientist, member of the Samish Indian Nation, and 2023 Pew marine fellow. He discusses the connection between Indigenous knowledge, conservation science, and how his childhood inspires his work on "After the Fact." 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://pew.org/3y4iXfb

911 shouldn’t have to serve as the default for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies. Increased collaboration between 911 and 988 call centers can allow call takers at both to exercise their expertise, via RAND and The Pew Charitable Trusts. https://lnkd.in/et-8bc3H

I've followed Dr. Katelyn Jetelina's work since the outbreak of COVID-19. As an epidemiologist, founder of Health Trust Initiative, and publisher of the “Your Local Epidemiologist” newsletter, she distills ever-evolving science to the public. It was a pleasure to talk with her at The Pew Charitable Trusts office about how she makes data accessible and actionable. She shared that being transparent and, “clear about what we know, what we don’t know, and how we’re working to find answers” are key. Working with integrity, accuracy and accountability is important to Pew’s mission and I’m glad that our staff had the opportunity to learn how Dr. Jetelina is embodying these values through her work. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Jetelina!

Digital literacy transforms technology into a tool. And for Americans with disabilities, accessibility tools—like screen readers—are only as helpful as they are easy-to-use. As Walter Prescher, digital navigator at Easter Seals Greater Houston points out, digital literacy skills are often a main barrier to entry for those with disabilities trying to access the internet. That’s why #DigitalLiteracy is so important. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) #BroadbandForAll

Community response teams across the nation are charting a new path in how we connect people in mental health crises to appropriate care. In Dallas, for example, 40% of calls resulted in a connection to a community service, and 29% were resolved on the scene, with no additional services needed, according to a report from Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute. Julie Wertheimer's new analysis highlights six key investments that policymakers can make to support those on the frontlines of care. #MentalHealthMatters https://lnkd.in/eUDvQ-WF
