Lifesharing was founded in 1973 to support UC San Diego Medical Center’s burn center and kidney transplant program. They now work with hospitals throughout the region and support transplant programs across the United States. Many thanks to our Lifesharing Team!

GOT THE PINK DOT? Last year, Lifesharing nurses helped transplant 497 organs — including hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys. Each organ was a precious gift from a donor in the San Diego region.... and each organ saved the life of someone on the transplant waiting list. . When you register as an organ and tissue donor through the DMV in California, you will get a pink dot on your driver license. (It looks like ones our nurses are holding in this picture.) We recommend that you share your decision with your family so they know your final wishes. . Lifesharing nurses help carry out the wishes of registered donors by finding matching recipients for donated organs. The need for organ donation is great: there are more than 100,000 patients on the transplant waiting list in the U.S. By registering as an organ and tissue donor, you can help us save lives — the choice is up to you. You can remove yourself from the donor registry at any time, or place limits your donation, by going online to DonateLifeCalifornia.org. . Organ and tissue donors are heroes. . #lifesharing #pinkdot #organdonor #tissuedonor

It’s one thing to train for and run a 5-kilometer race – it’s another to run it with an oxygen tank in tow! James Spalenka, 73, a Rancho Bernardo dentist and UC San Diego Health #pulmonary rehabilitation patient, isn’t one to let obstacles stand in his way. His recent completion of the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll 5k, while wheeling his tank alongside him, is a testament to his attitude and perseverance to reach goals through his recent three-month rehabilitation at UC San Diego Health for interstitial lung disease. Spalenka also has battled liver complications which culminated in a liver transplant in 2014. “My philosophy is that you can’t let your circumstances in life dictate how you want to live the rest of your life,” Spalenka said. “Even if you’ve got to drag an oxygen tank with you, do the things you love to do and figure out how you can keep doing them.” In addition to running, Spalenka wheels his oxygen tank with him on hikes and even trips to the beach. He regularly surfs and boogie boards while carrying a small #oxygen canister around his neck to use whenever a quick shot of oxygen is needed. “His accomplishments are an excellent example of determination as well as the possibilities of the fulfillment of goals and aspirations that we attempt to instill within our patients when they join our program,” said Brian Green, pulmonary rehabilitation program manager at UC San Diego Health. Now a graduate of the pulmonary rehabilitation program, Spalenka has set his sights on scuba diving this month in Hawaii and training for another 5k in November. “I want to live my life, to be in the ocean again, to run, to challenge myself,” Spalenka said. “Never give up hope - my goal is to be the oldest surfer still out there. I like to see what I’m capable of.” The first to offer pulmonary rehabilitation in San Diego in 1968, UC San Diego Health is a leader in the management of chronic respiratory conditions, learn more: https://lnkd.in/g9uBXajG

UCSD Vascular has arrived at East Campus! The staff and facilities are phenomenal! Thank you to Sandy Gergen, the cath lab staff, and the executive teams for setting everything up. I'm excited to improve access for our patients in East San Diego and beyond. Onward and upward! (And who can say no to free parking for patients AND providers 😯 😄 )

From great research and teaching comes great health care. Congratulations to UC San Diego School of Medicine for receiving a Tier 1 rating for research-intensive medical schools from U.S. News and World Report. As the region’s only academic health system, UC San Diego Health translates research discoveries from bench to bedside and back again. Together, we’re creating healthier communities throughout San Diego and beyond.

UC San Diego Health Sciences is topping the charts according to the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report (UNWR) and others. Here are some of the highlights: - For the fifth year in a row, UC San Diego Health has been named the top hospital in the San Diego area by USNWR. We also received our second consecutive “Honor Roll” distinction for exceptional patient care, given to just 20 hospitals nationwide, and ranked in the top 50 for 11 different care areas across the health system. - UC San Diego School of Medicine received a Tier 1 rating for research from UNWR, the highest tier rating among research-intensive medical schools in the nation. Only 16% of medical schools that qualified for the research ranking were rated in the Tier 1 classification. - UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences ranked No. 7 in the nation for research funding according to the @American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). While I’m proud to share these rankings, I’m far prouder of what they represent: our University’s commitment to providing the highest-quality patient care and expanding the possibilities of prevention and treatment through world-class research. As the region’s only academic health system, we’re proud to be leading the way in advancing medical knowledge and transforming the future of health care.
