Last week, we toured the cleanest marine terminal in the world, the Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT LLC) (Winner of the USGBC-CA's 2023 Project of the Year Award) ⭐️ The tour was led by ESG & Sustainability Director at LBCT, Bonnie Nixon, PhD! Our group got to witness containers transferred from ships to trucks and trains, all with electric cranes and vehicles, and see firsthand the largest battery exchange building in the world 🚢 📷 credit: Otto Mejia Business Photography

NEWS ALERT 🚨📰 At USGBC California, we have selected the RootDown LA KitchenPOD to be our 2024 Environmental Justice Project! 🥳 Since 2007, RootDown LA (RDLA) has been a strong presence in addressing food insecurity and lack of access in South Los Angeles. What is the RDLA KitchenPOD? 🤔 It is a versatile, mobile, and sustainable structure designed to ensure access to fresh, nutritious foods 🥕. Its innovative design, which includes a solar-powered refrigeration system, passive ventilation, and thermal cooling, is scalable and environmentally friendly 🌎. The straw walls outside the container are not just walls; they are a vibrant and integral part of the community garden, a testament to this collaborative vision for a healthier, more sustainable community. “The KitchenPOD is more than just a structure,” said Karen Ramirez, Executive Director, RootDown LA. “It's a dynamic platform for change. It extends and supports our impactful programming to promote health and wellness, offering zero-waste culinary and horticultural programming for a Youth-driven Neighborhood Food System.” We want to give Frances Anderton & KCRW a special shoutout for including our 2024 Environmental Justice Project in the DnA: Design and Architecture Newsletter ⭐️.
