“Scott single-handedly saved the Pet Insight Project when he stepped in (in the midst of a great deal of organizational and technical change) to be its head. He effected an immediate and significant increase in morale, and he got the team focused and moving again. He has a great ability to synthesize technical detail (machine learning, health AI) with business concerns and financial concerns, while also keeping an eye on the reason we’re all doing this (to make a positive difference in the world). He is an incredibly supportive leader who truly wants the best for the project and everyone he works with. I’ll miss working with Scott and I wish him and the Pet Insight team the very best!”

The use of sensor-driven data collection in ‘Precision Livestock Farming’ now presents an excellent opportunity for the collection of big data, using automated data-capture methods which are stress-free for the animal, and efficient for the farmer.
The Data-Driven Business Model is applied in the context of precision livestock farming businesses, recognising the desired outcomes of using data and the challenges to be overcome in order for data-driven precision livestock farming businesses to succeed. There are a number of challenges raised regarding responsible use of data in order to meet the societal needs for increased food security, and consumer desire for increased traceability in the global food chain with improved animal welfare. -
‘Social Listening’: a tool in the service of Food Security?
PROHEALTH is the largest European animal health project ever funded to help combat production diseases of pigs and poultry.
Rapidly increasing world population growth is causing increasing concern about future food security. Resulting intensification of farming increases the risk and susceptibility of animals to production diseases, which are multi-factorial in origin.
Production diseases are estimated to cause 10-15% reduction in performance efficiency of pig and poultry farming, resulting in huge financial losses. Coccidiosis alone costs the US poultry industry over US$ 1.5 billion.

Communication of scientific research is vital in raising public awareness on critical societal challenges like food security. However… this is not an easy task as subject matter can be highly complex with a diverse target audience. In order to improve communication, there are a number of important questions to be answered:
Where and when do audiences go online? What do they want to know? Where do they look for information? How could we communicate information across the audience? Where do social media fit in?
Novel ‘social listening’ digital techniques allow us to crawl the internet to measure exactly where audiences of interest go and what they are talking about. This offers a better understanding of professional challenges, industry insights and trends. We can then use social and community channels to enable stakeholder interaction and allow effective communication.
In February 2014, PROHEALTH and Brewlife launched their own proof-of-concept social listening campaign that spanned 12months of swine industry conversation in the UK and Belgium. What did we find? -

Zoetis and the University of Surrey announce the launch of vHive - the Veterinary Health Innovation Engine. This novel multi-disciplinary centre aspires to promote development and adoption of digital innovation in animal health. Digital technologies including wearables, apps, sensors and satellites promise to transform real-time information capture for animal owners and their veterinary advisors. This will enable improved understanding of animal health and early identification of problems in an analogous manner to eHealth for people. Furthermore, creation of digital platforms in animal health and development of sophisticated machine-learning analytics will facilitate early warning surveillance of population threats such as the Schmallenberg virus and Bluetongue epidemics we have witnessed in recent years. vHive will be a model for Open Innovation where the University’s expertise in the Centre for the Digital Economy within the Surrey Business School and the 5G Innovation Centre are integrated with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the experience of Zoetis to drive new research, education and business opportunities. We anticipate that other research institutions and commercial enterprises will also collaborate with vHive in the future. The collaboration is supported with an approximately £8.5 million co-investment in resources dedicated to the development and adoption of new technologies in animal health as well as support from the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership.
