Never Leave Money on the Table! Obtaining grants from foundations is one of the largest fundraising opportunities for nonprofits. And understanding this category is crucial if you want to raise more money to help your cause. The following stats are from a 2020 Candid study, Candid does an incredible job of sharing insights, opportunities and challenges in the nonprofit space. Today, I am going to share their statistics and next week some strategies to consider when approaching foundations. There were: * Over 120,000 Foundation in the US * With over 1.2 trillion in assets * Giving over 80 billion a year... And the numbers have only grown since 2020. And what sectors are they funding?

This isn’t a simple answer. While it's challenging for new nonprofits to secure grants, there are exceptions. Most funders prefer organizations with a proven track record and typically ask for three years of financial records. However, some grants are designed for newer nonprofits, so it's important to explore all your options. 3 things that all funder groups share in common: - It is a group made up principally of donors and/or foundations and not nonprofits - The donors and/or foundations all have a similar interest in a particular issue or issues - Many of the donors and/or foundations give grants to a similar group of nonprofits all work- ing in common cause on a particular issue Many funders want to collaborate with other donors in order to leverage dollars and learn together about the issue you care about. There is going to come a time when you want to collaborate with other donors who care about the same issue you care about. This is a good idea because you can leverage your dollars with those other donors, learn together and more. Let's talk about how you can do this well. I've helped a lot of donors create "pooled funds" or "donor networks" in the past and have found what works and what doesn't work, to help save you time. There are many different flavors of funder groups. They range from very informal, information-sharing groups to intensive donor circles.
