Folks throughout Arabella’s communities—both within our walls and among our partners—are celebrating #Juneteenth today. Juneteenth is the commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in Texas. Originating with the first celebration in Galveston in 1865, Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021 with the signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. For many Black Americans whose roots extend throughout the diaspora, Juneteenth serves as a day of remembrance to honor the legacies of those past as well as the long (and ongoing) journey toward liberation. Today, Arabella is urging our staff to deepen their learning about this holiday and the many nuances that surround it.
