Nora and Jade want to wish you all a happy National Walk to School Day! Walking to school is a lost art. According to a 2011 report from the National Center for Safe Routes to School, almost 90% of kids within a mile of their school walked or biked there in 1969. That number fell to 35% in 2009. How can we address this? Here are a few steps: - Consider organizing a walking school bus with neighbors or fellow parents - Advocate to local leaders to update plans related to walkability and support better land use strategies - Urge state and federal leaders to make Safe Routes to School a policy/funding priority The decline in walking to school is a policy choice. That also means we can *choose* a different path. . . . #nationalwalktoschoolday #kcmo #kcps #sidewalks #walkability #saferoutestoschool #waytogokc
