Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. As we commemorate this significant milestone, we reflect on the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the African American community. At ATTACh, we are committed to promoting understanding, healing, and connection, particularly for those impacted by trauma. Juneteenth reminds us of the importance of addressing systemic racism and its lasting effects on mental health and attachment within families and communities. As we celebrate freedom, we also recognize the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. This day underscores our mission to support and empower individuals and families through education, awareness, and action. Together, we can work towards a future where every person is valued, heard, and supported. Let's use this day to deepen our commitment to fostering an inclusive and just society. Identity Politics - Who are we? Where do we come from? Do we have something to believe in? Do we have Moral direction? Do we have Spiritual directions? Do we believe in our people? Do we believe in our ways? What are our ways? Are we willing to learn? Are we considered walking wounded? Is generational trauma still part of our lives? Do we allow attention brought in by one to be control by one person? Do we see ourselves as broken? Lateral Violence - Who is indigenous? To dark? To light? Knows the language? Doesn’t know the language? From the homeland? Not from the homeland? More indigenous than that one or another? Questions we must ask ourselves, discussions concerning who we are as a indigenous person, and how we can improve our thinking about each person we meet.

Whether it’s our own experience or that of those that came before us, we’re all shaped by trauma. For marginalized communities, that trauma is often an echo of colonialism and supremacy culture. It not only affects the way we see the world and how we raise our children, it also physically changes us via epigenetic inheritance. Those effects include hyper-vigilance, difficulty in regulating aggression, extreme reactions to stress, anxiety, depression, difficulty trusting others and substance abuse disorders. I hope it’s not lost on anyone how many of those challenges have been deemed unfortunate but not uncommon aspects of the marginalized experience. Thinking today of the countless children in 🍉 and the imprint this war will leave on them and our collective future. Regardless of our own traumatic histories, we must genuinely ask ourselves: how is subjecting children to injustice today creating a more just tomorrow? I am excited to be on the advisory board for Temple of the Forgotten, "a non-denominational spiritual organization dedicated to providing spiritual support and community for folks living on the margins of society: the unhoused, incarcerated, mentally ill and addicted." I believe that TOF is radical in that the external mission seeks to match inner values. We are called to repeatedly ask the question, "Can you keep the deep water still and clear, so it reflects without blurring? Can you love people and run things, and do so by not doing?" By refusing to understand the connections between previously experienced violence and the violence actively repeated today. The ignorance of society is thereby perpetuated. By entering professions that demand violence. By being gullible to politicians who designate scapegoats for the violence that has been stored up and which can finally be vented with impunity: “impure” races, ethnic “cleansing”, ostracized social minorities, other religious communities etc. Because of obedience to violence as a child, by readiness to obey any authority which recalls the authority of the parents, as the Germans obeyed Hitler, the Russians Stalin, the Serbs Milosevic. Conversely, some become aware of the repression and universal denial of childhood pain, realizing how violence is transmitted from parents to children, and stop hitting children regardless of age. This can be done (many have succeeded) as soon as one has understood that the causes of the “educational” violence are hidden in the repressed history of the parents.
