2024 could be a critical year for the charitable sector in Canada. The budget proposal for 2024 is concerning, as it could negatively affect donations from High Net Worth Canadians...who account for a large % of all donations. Charities are struggling already. Imagine Canada's pre-budget submission is well thought out. Our Federal Government needs to take a good look at all points, but in my opinion, points 1 and 11 are especially important. Be sure to read the full list. Recommendation 1 asks for a seat at the table, so to speak. Why isn't there a formal role in government that oversees the charitable sector? Social Capital (your tax dollars or your charitable donations) represents billions of dollars. It only makes sense to create a formal framework to ensure the sector, and the dollars, are working properly. Recommendation 11 asks for a proper impact assessment of the changes the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) will have on charitable donations. These changes alone could seriously affect charities from coast to coast if large donations are reduced or halted. Perhaps we all need to share this with our MPs and push for consideration of these well thought out recommendations. #donoradvisedfunds #philanthropy #canadagives

Addressing the risks that nonprofits face from low cash on hand and meager financial reserves requires a multi-faceted, sustained approach. A critical question that our foundation partners ask themselves is "How do we scale our support of nonprofits? How do we provide more working capital?" -- exactly what this new BDO report highlights. Catchafire is designed to address the heart of the issue -- the ability to access talent and pre-scoped projects that nonprofits need now. Reach out if you want to learn more, or share ways you are bolstering nonprofits' access to the resources they need. Let's talk!
New report from BDO's nonprofit practice finds that higher concentrations of government grants result in low levels of cash on hand, meager financial reserves, and very thin profit margins. The report offers guidance to leaders of nonprofits on how to best navigate these challenges, as well as advice to government funders and private philanthropy on how to better support the organizations delivering these kinds of services. https://lnkd.in/en5v9wTC

The article discusses the role #nonprofit leaders, #governments and #philanthropy can play in addressing the most acute challenges so nonprofits can achieve greater financial sustainability and maintain their ability to deliver critical services. #Fund them or they die on the vine. A slow drip is not the solution for today’s problems. We need to invest aggressively and find equilibrium. Becasue the planet is burning … 🌧️🌧️🌈 Financial sustainability to deliver critical services. 💰💰💰 Sustainability becasue these needs are not going away … but growing. Sustainability looks like stability. Stability begins with a solid foundation. For me, most practically that means #technology that can move #data. A solid foundation is #tech #infrastructure (and once the concrete dries … tidy rooms with neat sock drawers … aka organized and accessible data) 💥How do donors invest strategically to sustainably manage the onslaught of need? 😱By learning from the data that moves between stakeholders in glorious feedback loops💥💥💥💥💥 By becoming more precise in the solutioing. By iterating. By building stronger relationships and deeper trust (so we can get $/!- done without being mired in … poor communication 🤷♀️) #oar #reporting 🥊 Becasue the planet is burning … Don’t get me started 💜🌈🌻

County leaders may limit how much money they give to nonprofit groups and projects serving low-income neighborhoods in light of looming budget challenges. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors today is considering capping community spending per district at $1 million, but potentially raising the ceiling to $2 million for districts with greater need, such as District 2. The county’s technical term for such spending is “inventory items.” During the budget process, supervisors can propose one-time funds related to various community programs.
