ENGINEERING M&A: Ausenco acquired for $900 million to underpin critical minerals related capabilities. 📐 ⛏ 💰
Great write up by Brad Thompson in the The Australian Financial Review covering the news that Resource Capital Funds has sold engineering and consulting firm Ausenco for about $900 million in a deal with a US billionaire and private equity firms looking to boost their exposure to battery minerals and energy transition.
The $US578 million sale comes nine years after RCF took the Australian mining-focused engineering firm private in a deal valued at about $150 million and removed it from the ASX.
Ausenco’s new owners include billionaire Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries, which has a share in Major League Baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers and film studio A24. Brightstar Capital and the multi-billion dollar Claure Group, which owns a stake in Brightstar, are the other new owners.
Marcelo Claure immediately declared his intention to use Ausenco to help turn Latin America into a major force in lithium as well as copper. Ausenco has been a key plank of the investment portfolio at James McClements RCF since the Australian private equity firm’s original investment in 2014.
MY TAKE:
• First of all, congratulations to RCF for growing Ausenco so rapidly, and such a successful exit. I'm sure the return isn't as high as the implied 6x given incremental investment over the last 9 years, but a multi bagger nonetheless, and an amazing outcome for RCF investors.
• I've worked with Ausenco in the past, including in South America (which appears to be a key driver for the acquisition), and Ausenco has built both a dynamic culture, and excellent capabilities.
• The declared objective of the acquisition, to essentially grow in Latin America, in the area of #lithium and #copper is very strategic. This looks like a smart way to instantly acquire capabilities and intel, as part of a broader push into #battery / #critical#metals.

As a base for new technology the #UK is a good place to invest. Flexible labour law is key. Lower tax rates (🙄). Investment allowances.
Big things are happening behind the media black out for automotive, battery manufacturing, small nuclear reactors, aerospace.
It's really sad that the media is not very partisan so we hear more about the struggle at Tata steel, an old industrial structure.
Understanding this difference will help you stay #positive. People adapt and constantly grow. That's why dystopian projections rarely come true.
