Northwest VFD wants to remind everyone of the Burn Ban in effect for Unincorporated Harris County. Violation of the ban is a Class "C" misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition, any person who starts a fire that causes damage to property without the owner's consent may be charged with Reckless Damage or Destruction, a Class C misdemeanor, or arson, a felony. More than 200,000 people drown every year around the world. In Victoria, we’ve seen a rise in deaths caused by drowning. Here are the facts: ✍ 🔵 Drowning accounts for the highest fatality rate among preventable injuries in children. 🔵 Deaths amongst men aged 25-44 are rising due to risk-taking behaviours and overestimating their own aquatic abilities, and the statistics are even higher for those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds 🔵 Over a third of drownings are people over 65 years old around the home, including in bathtubs and home pools. While I wish this sort of advocacy wasn’t necessary, it’s great to see organisations (Suicide Prevention Australia & Black Dog Institute)partnering to help create practical, real-world changes in suicide prevention. Secure and affordable housing is not something that many people think of as a suicide prevention measure, but it really is at the foundation of such work: if people have safe, affordable, secure housing then they can form meaningful long-term relationships in their communities, which provide support. Children can attend the same school long-term, rather than constantly being moved around, and maintain friendships as they grow up in the same community. Parents can maintain jobs. Life is just a whole lot less stressful if the bottom rungs of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are being met, and people can focus on other fulfilling and meaningful aspects of life. Much of what is labeled as ‘suicide prevention’ - and where a great deal of the focus and funding is - is more in the intervention space e.g. emergency mental health care or help lines, once people are already suicidal. While such services are absolutely critical, ensuring basic needs are met can prevent more people needing such services. #suicideprevention

25 July is World Drowning Prevention Day. 236,000 people die as a result of drowning annually, and 40% of fatal drownings are children under the age of 15. Middle and low income countries like South Africa make up 90% of fatal drowning worldwide. Anyone can drown, no one should!!!!
