Our groundbreaking mixed-methods study highlights the current gaps in Cultural Competence/Humility, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEIA) among students and faculty. We surveyed 100 participants and discovered fascinating insights. While faculty scored slightly higher in key domains, both groups recognize the importance of addressing DEIA challenges. Our next steps include comprehensive training for students & faculty, DEIA-informed policies, and enhancing curriculum to ensure inclusive education for all. In the case of the hospital below, an increase in patient volume, coming from all over the country and the world and need for services including interpreters and more. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center was recently named America's best children's hospital by U.S. News & World Report — a first-time feat. "Cincinnati Children's saw patient volumes increase up to 25 percent. In a post-COVID world, the system is planning for a 10 to 15 percent rise in high-complexity cases — a prediction that is holding true so far. And patients aren't just coming from all over the country. They're coming from all over the world... As a result, Cincinnati Children's has been pouring into programs for global patients. The hospital has increased interpreter services, especially for languages less commonly spoken in the U.S. It is ensuring patients use its online "second opinion" program to improve asynchronous access. And it is working to expand the "destination excellence" program, which helps match international families with lodging and other needs. #healthcare #ranks #patients #technology #communication

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, America has faced a dire labor shortage in the healthcare sector, which will only worsen in the future; the American Hospital Association predicts a shortage of over 3.2 million healthcare workers by 2026. Meanwhile, in states like Illinois, more than 11,000 internationally trained medical professionals are un- or underemployed. Upwardly Global has worked with hundreds of internationally trained medical professionals as they restart their careers in the United States. To date, they have supported more than 850 healthcare workers with foreign credentials, over 730 of whom have secured full-time work in their field and more than 120 having been matched to residency positions. While the U.S. is expected to face a great shortfall of physicians, nurses, and allied health workers within the next ten years, immigration research* shows that the country doesn’t utilize the skills of thousands of immigrants with international healthcare credentials.
