I am honored to serve as Chair of Close the Gap, a Boston Scientific health equity initiative, and to have a fulfilling career in the cardiology med device field. Neither of those would be true today if someone in 1982 hadn’t asked me: “What’s a nice kid like you doing working in the laundry?” That person was Emmanuel Angelo – one of the many mentors I’ve been blessed with who didn’t look past me, who saw my potential. Their life-changing – I’d even say life-saving – encouragement inspires me to want to give back, to help others be seen in the way they saw me. So much has changed since my days in the laundry room at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. But I’m acutely aware of how much more change is needed. Today, this Juneteenth, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made as a nation, while also recommitting to seeing us all. Let’s harness the power of diversity – people with different backgrounds and perspectives – to drive innovation. Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed firsthand how this leads to better problem-solving, more effective decision-making, and, ultimately, improved outcomes. And that is certainly true for healthcare. Together, we can bridge the gaps for those who are still overlooked. In fact, together we must. #CloseTheGap #Juneteenth #HealthEquity
