Daniel Spencer, you make a valid point. Typically, companies adopt a template sales strategy hoping to capture an immediate bump in revenue by converting customers versus a longer-term plan of developing a foundationally sound business. Typically, RSMs only last a few years in their role, especially if they cannot quickly convert their relationships into primary users, even with the all too common consultant route. Once their VP gets pressure from the CEO or BOD to make a new and considerable number, their first action is to blame and terminate the RSM in a CYA move. Rinse and repeat. In my opinion, I'm skeptical that a senior sales rep can outperform an experienced RSM. There is a lot more to managing a region than accounts within a narrowly defined territory. Spine is a challenging industry, but that's what makes it fun. Good post. #neverquit

💡Hiring a Regional Sales Manager? Here's a thought.....💡 Throughout my time partnering with Spine players to hire top talent at a Regional Manager level, over 70% will only consider professionals currently in multi-state regional roles, that would be taking a lateral step.....but is there a better way? After all....are you getting the perfect fit if it's a sideways step? Don't get me wrong, it can be highly effective, particularly for turnaround roles or positions with complex distributor structures. Focusing on leaders that have been there and done it can have it's benefits, with strong networks and a proven track record. But in many cases, this can cause problems with culture or professional ambition and mitigates the chance to hire a rock star that's ready to take the next step. It's critical to think about what you need from the hire, beyond the short term spike in sales from converting a couple of competitive customers. How will your new hire grow? What impact can they make beyond their number? You see, there is a bottleneck that prevents elite Sales Representatives getting the promotions they deserve.... I've spoken with dozens of remarkable Senior Sales Representatives over the last few weeks that are crushing it, but their opportunities to progress are next to none. 𝘚𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. By giving someone their next career step, you will increase your chances of them sticking around and if your hiring process is adequate, you'll get someone that will work their socks off to prove they deserve that promotion. So......If you are a spine company looking for a 'hunter' to manage a multi state geography, consider changing your approach. The talent pool is brilliant and the approach will set you apart from competition. #hiringstrategy #spine #regionalmanager #spinesurgery
