Did you know only 45% of students from low-income households who graduate from high school enroll in college, compared to 72% of their peers from higher-income households? And while Colorado is one of the five most educated states in the country, we’re in the bottom five at helping Colorado students graduate high school and get into college. Minds Matter Colorado (www.mindsmatterco.org) is on a mission to prove that it’s access, not ability, that limits college choice for many qualified students. So we connect high-performing students from low-income households with the relationships and resources they need to expand their post-secondary educational horizons. Our approach combines three years of mentorship with committed volunteers (like me!), weekly college-prep instruction, and access to summer programs at colleges across the country. As a result, 100 percent of our graduates complete high school on time and are accepted to four-year colleges and universities with scholarships. If you'd like to support Minds Matter, consider donating through the link below for #GivingTuesday. All donations go to ensuring my mentees and students like them receive the funding needed for things like summer program tuition, college application fees, SAT / ACT test prep, and more! https://lnkd.in/gGk7w_5z

Lessons we can all apply to our lives. Whether it’s business, athletics, raising children, education, continuing to develop our relationship with our significant others I think we can all learn a thing or two about paying attention to the basics. https://lnkd.in/gyfJRGve

Happy #GivingTuesday ! Please consider celebrating this year by donating to PSU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA). This GivingTuesday, we are aiming to be able to develop internally by raising funds to create more opportunities for GPSA to support graduate students. We currently do not receive enough funds to be able to fully support the requests of student groups coming to us for co-sponsorship. We are working to expand our ability to offer integrated salaried positions to enable our student members to be supported for all of the work that they do. We have started work toward an initiative to train students to work as medical and legal interpreters for our legal, medical, and psychological clinics. Our long-term goal is to start being able to offer a childcare grant for graduate, professional, and medical students who are traveling for their research. We also want to create a Penn State Grad School publication, where we would be able to present the work of our students. GPSA is the longest-running student governing body here at Penn State, established 73 years ago. When you give to GPSA, your tax-deductible donation will go to support events that develop bonds and promote networking within the graduate and professional student communities. GPSA believes that We Are better together, and we work to build a better tomorrow for all graduate and professional students. https://lnkd.in/dG_GRKJW

What do children do while their parents are working? They are in school you say? In our town, elementary school hours are 9:10 am - 3:25 pm. Are your work hours between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm? So I ask again: what do children do while their parents work? How about when their parents work from 6:15 am, or don't get off until 5:45 pm? How do they keep their children safe? This is where before and after school programs come to the rescue. Places, where children can be safe, where they can explore their interests and skills, make friends, receive help with their homework and explore the world through enriched activities. All working families should have a place like that available, regardless of their income. Second Home Learning Center is one of these safe havens for children and families. Second Home Learning Center has been dedicated to provide the safety, caring adults, and learning opportunities to children and their families since 2007. We are dedicated to make sure our service is affordable to all families. Today, YOU can make a difference for these children. Today, YOUR DONATION will allow us to keep our fees and offer scholarships for families that are in need. Visit the Great Community Give today and show your support. https://lnkd.in/eqz3sxJk

With forward thinking leaders, anything is possible! - Pinpoint an area of concern. - Research how others have effectively addressed the concern. - Involve the community to create an actionable mission plan. - Apply for grants that align with the plan. - Use the funds as agreed upon. These steps involve action research and community outreach. I will preach day in and day out about the necessity of buy-in within the community. Everyone’s voice needs a microphone to ensure an equitable, actionable, solution-oriented outcome leads to success!
In Michigan, a grant helped to launch a new afterschool and summer learning program for FREE in a community where 80% of youth qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. How has funding helped YOUR program #EngageEveryStudent? https://lnkd.in/eDCs5ikz
