    Years ago a fake Rolex was easy to spot due to the cheap quartz movement that 'ticked' rather than 'swept'. As Chinese automatic movements got cheaper, the 'tick' disappeared but the movement was laughably poor quality and didn't stand up to a moment's scrutiny. These movements have evolved over time with better colouring and more engraving to match the original. Today, clone movements have been developed which copy the individual components of the entire Rolex calibre. Yes, the finish is poor and there are still discrepancies for those who know where to look, but a quick glance inside the caseback is no longer enough.
