❓ What should the future of #accountability #collaboration look like? 📣 Have your say! Ten years ago, the #humanitarian community came together at the World Humanitarian Summit, calling for a ‘change that gives a voice and #leadership to affected people and local organisations as agents of their own destiny.’ Despite much important progress, there is still a long way to go to meet this ambition. At the recent updated #CHS launch, we heard a rallying cry for stronger collaboration on #accountability to affected people, but what should this look like? CHS Alliance and ICVA (International Council of Voluntary Agencies) are committed to uniting our global networks to spark the system shift needed. We are therefore seeking your views to create a more accountable and equitable system for people in crisis. ➡ Tell us how we can make this a reality, via an online survey open until 3 June: https://lnkd.in/e6XpdmfR Tanya Wood Jamie Munn Manisha Thomas H2H Network ALNAP ODI Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection (PHAP) Start Network NEAR (Network for Empowered Aid Response) CDAC Network InterAction Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Humanitarian Leadership Academy

The responsiveness of government institutions to the needs of all people, as well as the ways in which decisions are made is a key element for peace at national and institutional levels. It is in this vein that Interpeace aims to #EmbedPeace. In 2023, Interpeace reached 26 partnerships with state institutions in countries including Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Rwanda, Somalia and Yemen, among others. Interpeace also endorsed the Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace, and offered a tangible contribution to the package of solutions: a climate-security programming dashboard for climate finance, developed in partnership with the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which provides new frameworks and resources to design climate finance projects in fragile settings. #Interpeace30yrs Learn more about how Interpeace is embedding peace - https://lnkd.in/ercaSnq8

Collective leadership calls for everyone in the humanitarian system to take responsibility for the success of the system as a whole – not just for their own area of interest or mandate. Today, collective leadership is poorly understood and practised. There is a lot of talk of leadership at the working levels; it seems less certain that much has changed at the top. As this is a perennial issue, how do you fix it? What could or should collective leadership mean for an HCT (as a leadership team), or the ERC? In the lead-up to our anniversary, join us as we look back on previous work, highlighting the lessons and recommendations that past pieces have brought up and exploring any outcomes, follow-up, or lack thereof. This message on collective leadership is but one of many components of our retrospective; you can find the full series at https://bit.ly/HERE10 #HERE10 Here are the projects where we've explored this further: - Evaluation of UNICEF’s Role as Cluster Lead (Co-Lead) Agency (CLARE II): https://bit.ly/39jlndy - Review of Education Cluster Co-Leadership: https://bit.ly/3z0Ebum - More than the sum of the parts? Moving humanitarian accountability from a tickbox to a turning point: the crucial role of organisational leadership As part of a series examining crucial ‘sticking points’ for humanitarians, a new ALNAP paper 'From tickbox to turning point' explores what it takes to create a more accountable humanitarian system. The seemingly entrenched nature of these challenges can seem daunting. But several organisations are working inventively on these issues. Our new paper draws inspiration from promising practice and provides recommendations to humanitarian decision-makers for overcoming these challenges, providing a range of practical examples and resources. While there is more learning to be done and shared across the sector on overcoming these issues – including learning from local organisations close to communities – our contribution hopes to provide a starting point for more targeted conversations and actions driving forward meaningful and integrated accountability for people affected by crisis. Joining in from the UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi! The #2024UNCSC has gathered representatives from over 110 countries across the world. They have all met to prepare and give input for the upcoming #SummitoftheFuture – a global high-level meeting aiming to bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how to deliver for a more sustainable future and inclusive multilateral system. Listen to Gloria Soma one of our partner organisations TITI Foundation from #SouthSudan, sharing her key take aways from the meeting: 📍Importance of reshaping the global financial structures to ensure more inclusive and #localised funding to reach local organisations and at community level. 🤝 The need for system change to ensure bottom-up, multi-sectoral responses in humanitarian emergencies to address the needs and rights of the communities affected by crisis. It is high time we become better listeners and support local actors and to take lead. Regeringskansliet, Utrikesdepartementet United Nations Start Network

Another Humanitarian Network and Partnership week #ocha #HNPW and we are still talking about the triple #nexus (peace, humanitarian, development) when there is little cooperation between #humanitarian and #development actors mainly due to: 1) An unsustainable and outdated “nexus approach” that does little to address current security challenges. 2) Communities (unbelievably) are still not in charge of creating a holistic and integrated process #localisation. 3) Donors only seek to sponsor quick, high profile humanitarian situations and have little interest in long term development goals -the “stay and deliver” approach. 4) The private sector and other greedy actors are still given priority over CSOs and local grassroots groups. 5) The conversations focus on “participatory” approaches when middle managers still refuse to give up coveted power positions due to mistrust of the community and distrust of local government officials.

The recently released #UN 2024 Global Humanitarian Overview launches an appeal for $46.4 billion to help 180.5 million people (out of 300miliion in need) in 72 countries. In 2023 the #GHO required $55.5 billion to assist 248 million of the 363 million people in need. This is the first time in over 30 years of this bulletin that the #humanitarian demands have dropped from the previous year. Does this mean #development and #peacebuilding actors are now more proactive than before, or does this mean the humanitarians are leaving space for more development. On another end, does this mean the number of crises and people affected by these crises is projected to reduce in 2024? Whatever the case, my take is development and peacebuilding actors must step up. #tripplenexus

Our latest edition of The AIDN Beat went live last week 🌎 The AIDN Beat is an inclusive space for thought leadership pieces that explore the complexities, trends, and future of the Australian international development sector. We also include a selection of curated, recent articles from the international development sector, and a longer reading recommendation for our subscribers. In our latest edition, we were thrilled to feature a piece from Tamar Kosky Lazarus - Chief Development and Communications Officer at IsraAID. In the piece, Tamar reflects upon a recent visit to two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Juba, South Sudan. On one hand, the devastating situation in the camps reinforced for Tamar that the humanitarian community must do better to support these protracted crises. On the other hand, Tamar highlights one women-led community group in Lemon Gaba that has continued to demonstrate incredible resilience despite these circumstances. The experience reiterated that for any development program to be sustainable: 👉 it must be community-led; 👉 it must be given the time and space to flourish under local leadership; and 👉 it must actively work to ensure that long-term, external dependencies are not created.
