Thriving communities are connected communities, and designing and managing safe streets prioritizes a culture of traffic safety and promotes equitable mobility for all. VisionZero is an international initiative focused on systemic changes and data-driven approaches to improve road safety and save lives. Our planning and engineering experts are collaborating with the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) to manage their #VisionZero program to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040. Program support covers safety-oriented transportation priorities, long-term strategic planning, and short-term initiatives, including: 📊 Analyzing and synthesizing data from fatal and severe traffic collisions, systemic safety trends, and equity and demographics to identify, prioritize, communicate, and advocate for safety within the 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan. 💲 Securing a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets for All (SS4A) implementation grant award of $16,200,000, and a National Safety Council $150,000 Road to Zero Grant, with the support of Jenny Godwin, AICP. 🤝 Partnering with Esri to build a Vision Zero data dashboard to track progress towards meeting safety goals and developing a community liaison program to support context-sensitive outreach in equity-priority areas. 🚧 Completing safety-focused projects for intersections, transit stops, bike facilities, and other high-priority locations before the 2024 National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Conference, held in Miami this past May. Investing in initiatives like Vision Zero enhances quality of life and sets the stage for safer, more resilient communities. The Wilson River experienced an extreme flood in December 2015, caused by heavy rainfall and storm-induced tidal influences. Since 2021, our team has managed the Anderson County Transportation Committee (ACTC) program in South Carolina, which helps fund local transportation projects, including state and county road and city street improvements. One of the benefits of this ongoing collaboration is cost savings through tailored project recommendations and streamlined delivery. The Dalton Road intersection project, which realigned the road about 350 feet south with a key access road to the local high school, shows this benefit in action. When the contractor discovered superelevation inconsistencies in the State Route to which the relocation connected, our design team quickly jumped in to revise the roadway plan and profile. Design Team Lead Chad Bobrowski worked daily with Project Lead Daniel Shaw, who was coordinating survey needs with the contractor’s layout team, to provide the elevation data as grading was underway. This daily coordination resulted in a speedy solution that avoided the contractor requesting a time extension or a change order. The intersection was completed three months ahead of schedule with 12% cost savings! East of Salt Lake City in the Wasatch Range is picturesque Emigration Canyon, which holds historic significance as the original route pioneers took into this area of Utah. Winding Emigration Canyon Road is a popular cycling destination due to its views and recreation access. As we gear up for summer adventures, we’re looking back at our engineering design and public involvement work on this improvement project, which included: 💧 Roadway overlays, utility collar reconstructions, and shoulder and drainage improvements to move stormwater more effectively and help maintain the roadway’s integrity. 🚴 Lane striping adjustments to add bike lanes, improving safety for bike riders and drivers alike. 📣 Extensive outreach effort to address public concern around the roadway closure to cyclists during construction, which was necessary in the narrow canyon. After passing the bar, she returned to work at Consor as a contract attorney. 🌟 Tied together her background in HR and experience working at an immigration clinic during law school to support the complexities of employment law, compliance, and immigration programs as a senior HR specialist.
