Several months ago, I came across Steve Job’s speech delivered at Stanford’s commencement ceremony in 2005 and since then it has become my one of the all-time favorite speeches because it resonates with my beliefs and experiences; and I like to revisit it time to time. https://lnkd.in/eZib-YQm In this speech, Steve talked about 3 things: (1) importance of connecting the dots: -One cannot connect the dots looking forward, but it can only be connected looking backwards. -So, do your Karma, stay curious and intuitive, follow your heart even if it leads you off the well worn paths. -Trust the process, your guts, and destiny. (2) story of love and loss: -work hard, do what you love and love what you do, that is the only way you can do great work. -if you haven’t found what you are looking for, don’t settle, keep looking. -embrace failures and unexpected turns. -My favorite quotes from this story:”heaviness of being successful was replaced by lightness of being beginner again” when he was fired from Apple. “Sometimes life gonna hit you with a brick on head; don’t loose faith” (3) story of Death: -remembering we all gonna die at some day gives courage to make big choices in life; it takes away external pressure, pride, fear of failures/rejection and encourages to focus on what truly matters. -“your time is limited; so don’t waste by living someone else’s life” -Don’t let noise of other people’s opinion to drown down your inner voice -“have courage to follow your heart and intuition-they knows what you truly want to become; everything else is seconodary” #SteveJobs #Stanford #connectingthedots #loveAndLoss #DepthOfDeath

On October 5, Steve Jobs died of complications from pancreatic cancer. Today marks the 12th anniversary of his passing. He revolutionized the world and left us many gifts. Among them is his 2005 Stanford University Commencement Speech, considered one of the best speeches of modern times. Why? It was authentic, deeply personal, and transformative. Drawing from pivotal points in his life, he urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see opportunities in life's setbacks-- including death itself. “Stay hungry, stay foolish,” he said. It was a 14-mintue speech in three parts: 1. Dropping out of college. 2. Lessons he learned from being fired by Apple in 1985. And 3. Reflections on death.   His throughline was “Embrace the limited time we have.” The structure was three stories told with heart and humility. The speech has been studied and analyzed as an example of speechmaking using Aristotle’s three appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. In his own style, he described the vision of his career and aspirations (ethos), gave autobiographical facts (logos), and expressed his ideas of love and death (pathos). I realize this is easier said than done, but excelling in college is what leads to financial success and happiness much more so than attending the most "impressive" school you can gain admission to. One of the most well-known speeches circling the internet is Steve Jobs’s 2005 Stanford speech. I have watched the speech countless times and make sure to circle back to it at least once a year. In the speech Steve delivers a commencement speech to graduates, sharing three personal stories from his life: Connecting the dots, Love and loss, and Death. I feel each story carries valuable lessons about life, career, and embracing your life journey. These are my key takeaways: Connecting the Dots - Jobs dropped out of college but continued learning by attending calligraphy classes. He emphasises the importance of following curiosity and intuition. Learning calligraphy seemed impractical at the time, but it later influenced the design of the Macintosh computer. Jobs advises trusting that life's experiences will connect in meaningful ways, even if it's not apparent at the moment. Love and Loss - Despite being fired from Apple, Jobs maintained his passion for innovation and started over with NeXT and Pixar. Losing his position at Apple allowed him to rediscover his love for his work and enter a creative period. He encourages graduates to find what they love and not to settle for anything less. Death - Jobs reflected on mortality and the impact of a cancer diagnosis. Facing death clarified his priorities and reinforced the importance of living authentically. He advises against wasting time on others' expectations and encourages following one's intuition. Inspirational Message - Jobs shares a farewell message from "The Whole Earth Catalog": "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." He wishes the graduates to maintain curiosity and embrace foolishness in their pursuit of greatness. Overall Advice - Trust in life's journey and the interconnectedness of experiences. Pursue passion and love in work and life. Embrace mortality as a catalyst for living authentically. Stay hungry for knowledge and stay foolish in exploring new possibilities.
