Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to this amazing leadership summit hosted by Zensights LLC. The focus was mission-based leadership and purpose-driven action. The panels consisted of some amazing military and pharma/biotech leaders who shared their perspectives on building mission based cultures. Although I arrived at my hotel room at 3:30AM the night prior (morning of...?) due to a flight delay, I didn't need much caffeine to go through the day as it was packed with useful insights. Here are my top 10 takeaways: 1. Leadership can be lonely - Build your peer support structure and rely on each other 2. Share intent along with task, show how the task and the teams' actions connect with the overall purpose 3. Create the environment for success: Trust is essential to connect centralized command with decentralized execution/action 4. Four key drivers of successful teams: Agility, Empowerment, Trust and Initiative 5. Synchronize responsibility and authority with capacity 6. Build the bench - your legacy is how well you coach and lead those who follow you (This one really resonates with me) 7. Be a life long learner. Center yourself when making big decisions 8. Clear mission, maximum autonomy. People will surprise you positively 9. 'Humanize' yourself as a leader. Make yourself approachable 10. Our challenge when working with EY was to support the development of talented employees showing the potential to become partners or senior leaders of the firm.
