My first Ph.D. paper is finally out! https://lnkd.in/g5KQwrtS I worked and learned from an incredible team to develop a quantitative-spatial model that could identify areas needing attention for conservation and pandemic prevention. 🦇🌿🦠 The coevolutionary mosaic of bat betacoronavirus emergence risk displays the complexity of spatial cross-species transmission risk beyond the mere presence or absence of the pathogen-host in a specific location by considering coevolutionary factors such as viral sharing and host uniqueness.

ICEBAT-UK (https://lnkd.in/ewpDGCfE) aims at presenting the added value and development of aquatic therapy. As scientific chair I will not be in the frontline of the congress, and will only teach a pool session, based on e.g. work of keynote speakers Sato and Psycharakis: combining fall prevention items with executive functions, addressing the sensorymotor – and attentional networks in the brain.

In this paper, researchers describe the Dutch surveillance system and the added surveillance components for early detection of SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks and their results in Dutch mink farms. Here's our latest paper's digest, discussing the damage caused by trypanosome parasites to blood vessels, authored by the amazing Joana Loureiro.

For the less squeamish, I would absolutely recommend reading this fascinating Mitchell (2024) article on palaeoparasitology, and how the study of parasites discovered in archaeological contexts can inform on the behaviour of past human populations. By utilising modern understanding of parasite lifecycles and preferred habitats, our knowledge of human dietary, migratory, and sanitary habits from archaeological periods can be reassessed and developed. The only limitation is that the study of endoparasites (worms, etc...) in particular, requires at the very least, pretty extensive sampling of burial contexts. This means that the development of palaeoparasitology may be predominantly restricted to countries where archaeological excavation is controlled by research organisations.
