Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) has been chosen by Malaysia Airlines (MH) as its latest destination for a weekly full freighter cargo service with the first inbound flight set to arrive from Kuala Lumpur in early April. The scheduled weekly flight will use the relatively fuel-efficient and quieter MH Airbus A330F and make MST only the second airport in Europe that MH flies to, after Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (AMS). “This is an important opportunity for MST, as since Royal Schiphol Group (RSG) invested in 40 percent of the airport last year, we have seen our operations consistently growing,” said Jonas van Stekelenburg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MST. The need for local co-owners, plus no commonality for long haul vs short haul aircraft type (crucial issue for an LCC) have always meant complicated ownership structure for all of Airasia's airlines. Really hard to bring them all together. Benefits of the move should include simplified (ie faster) decisions on things such as capex and other funding allocations, better coordination to capture connecting travellers (ie flight schedules), and higher economies of scale (ie drive down unit costs further) for common costs such as pilot and cabin crew training, maintenance contracts, etc. Cons would be if a single airline is suffering, it will invariably negatively affect the rest (ie conglomerate discount), possible cross default risks beyond the control of any one country GM (ie need for head ofc control becomes hell of a lot stronger), and the usual internal fighting in a massive conglomerate distracting operations. Asia Aviation Plc. (AAV), the parent company of Thai AirAsia, reported a significant improvement in 2023 with a net profit of Baht 465.8 million. Normalising the unrealised FX gain, we posted a thin core loss of approx. Baht (200) million. My take on this result... The fares have grown, as all are aware, but that reflects the recovering travel demand and the fact that all operations costs went up like other businesses impacted by post-COVID aftermath, inflationary pressure and rising maintenance aircraft costs. Please note that many airlines have not turned core profitable despite the high fares. Until things are better normalised, it's better to assume the sustained level of fares. Ezy Airlines is newly launched for high-spending local travelers in Thailand. “Ezy Airlines” has implemented various technologies and innovations to address the challenges of time and complexity in the pre-departure process. This aligns with the five-year investment promotion strategy (2023 – 2027) with the vision of “Promoting Investment to Restructure the Thai Economy into a New Economy consisting of Innovation, Competitive and Inclusive. Ezy Airlines will initially have only two pilots, without flight attendants or food service which use Caravan Ex with 12 seats to operate a one-hour flight, focusing on domestic flights in the South. According to an online news article in The Star dated 16 November 2023, SKS Airways recorded the highest on-time performance for domestic flights at 95%, followed by MASwings at 93%, Batik Air Malaysia at 82%, and Firefly with a 77% rating. However, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia were ranked the lowest on flight punctuality for domestic flights, at 74%. Yesterday I flew to a major destination in Malaysia, by Firefly, and I was happy that it was on time. Thank you, Firefly. We hope that the punctuality of all concerned airlines has been addressed by now. Flight punctuality is crucial for business travellers because it directly impacts their schedules, meetings, and overall productivity. Delays can disrupt tight itineraries, causing missed connections, rescheduled meetings, and potentially lost business opportunities. Punctuality ensures efficiency and reliability, which are essential for maintaining professionalism and meeting deadlines. In general, flight delays can be caused by various factors, such as adverse weather conditions, air traffic congestion, technical issues with the aircraft, airport operations issues like equipment malfunctions, and occasionally, security-related incidents or airspace restrictions. GARUDA SPREADS ITS WINGS Garuda Indonesia has nine new aircraft on order for 2024, which allows it to add new routes. On 04 April Garuda launched a new Boeing B777-300 service from Jakarta CGK Airport to Doha DOH Airport (Qatar), marking a significant step in connecting Southeast Asia and the Middle East. With Garuda Indonesia joining Malaysia Airlines and Philippine Airlines, Doha Airport is now serviced by three Southeast Asian carriers. This step for Garuda solidifies its position as a key player in regional connectivity. To meet an increase in demand, the ‘Garuda group’ plans to add nine aircraft in 2024. The planes that will arrive progressively throughout the year include four Boeing 737-800s, two widebody 777-300ERs, and two Airbus A330-200s. Some of that capacity will allow Garuda to launch these new flights to Doha and the airline has said it complies with lessor requirements for new aircraft leases. The Garuda airline group includes low-cost carrier Citilink, maintenance and repair operator GMF AeroAsia, logistics business Aerowisata, and ASYST, a provider of advanced IT solutions for the transportation and travel industries. #garuda #airtransport

The Malaysian aviation industry has been facing turbulence lately. Over the past few weeks, Malaysia Airlines has been at the centre of attention due to a string of technical incidents, including engine problems, cabin pressure failures, and emergency landings. But they’re not alone – in the last few months, (sister company) Firefly as well as AirAsia have also experienced their share of flight delays and subsequent high-profile customer complaints. The situation for Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has been further exacerbated by workforce shortages, particularly in maintenance, leading to further operational difficulties and delays. To make matters worse, politicians and political commentators, who are not industry experts, are wading into public discourse to ride the wave and bring some form of relevancy for themselves, further adding jet fuel to the fire. The Government has taken decisive action to get the industry to course correct. The Transport Ministry recently introduced new regulations requiring airlines to fully refund passengers for flights delayed by at least five hours. Additionally, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has also begun to bare its teeth, forcing MAG to step up remedial actions. As the dust settles, MAG needs to prioritise #reputation recovery. To their credit, they have been as open and transparent as can be expected when communicating about their challenges with stakeholders. Regular updates on operational improvements and safety measures can help rebuild trust and confidence. It would also be useful to learn how they’re addressing workforce shortages and improving operations to minimise delays, cancellations, and technical incidents. Customers and stakeholders would be looking for MAG’s leadership to articulate a clear, long-term vision for the company that prioritizes safety, reliability, and sustainability. Hopefully, the worst is over, and the next months will see a rebirth of MAG and the Malaysian aviation industry, emerging stronger and more resilient than their counterparts across the region. In the midst of every #crisis, lies great opportunity.
