The upcoming African Union 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐢𝐝-𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 will assess the progress of the continental integration agenda and evaluate the efficiency of the harmonization of policies between the 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 and the 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. Why Congo Matters? The Democratic Republic of the Congo is in central Africa and is the largest country in sub-Sahara Africa and has a population of about 89 million people. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is bordered by 9 countries, the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania to the east, Zambia and Angola to the south, and the Republic of the Congo to the west. The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 200 languages spoken in the country. Challenges of regional economic integration in Africa. These integrations are to foster improved economy for member states. As much as these integrations is for development in the particular region, there are still many issues that hinders the achievement of such union's objectives. These integrations in Africa includes ECOWAS, ECWA, Maghreb union and others. Language barrier, cultural diversity, political instability, differences in political ideas, overlapping groups that results in clash of interest, lack of infrastructure, lack of funding, problem with formulation of policies, national interest/regional interest, formulation of policy and personal policy/national policy are challenges of regional economic integration in Africa. The Executive team from the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) visited the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, including international consultants assisting with a workshop on migration's contribution to Ghana's development. The discussion was productive, emphasizing how the diaspora contributes to sustainable development in both origin and destination countries through diverse economic, social, and cultural inputs. We highlighted the significant economic and socio-cultural potential of the diaspora and the importance of the Diaspora Engagement Policy, implemented by the ISIC. The meeting also addressed migrants' contributions to global development, noting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals' recognition of these contributions. Agenda 2063 similarly acknowledges the diaspora's importance, urging Member States to facilitate diaspora participation and free movement, as outlined in the 2018 African Union Free Movement of Persons Protocol. The primary objective of this exploratory mission was to discuss and explore potential partnerships regarding the technical establishment of the Togolese National Migration Observatory. Key topics of discussion included: - The importance of changing the narrative around migration to highlight the positive contributions of migrants and the diaspora to economic and social development. - The need for robust, country-specific data to inform analysis and enable sound, fact-based decision-making. - Sharing experiences on the impact of remittances and the contribution of the diaspora to economic and social development. - Effective management of migration flows. - Developing a comprehensive national migration observatory that will also focus on diaspora engagement and economic aspects. The meeting was highly productive and laid a solid foundation for future cooperation.
