When making hiring decisions, do not step over dollars to pick up dimes. We had a discussion this morning with a Maintenance Manager whom we have known for years… This individual is partnering with Capstones Maintenance & Skilled Trades Team on 6 off-shift Technician openings (non-union). This Manager had his foot in the sand with one of our recruiters as the candidate was looking for an extra $1.00/hr. He was firm that he would not exceed an arbitrary base rate that he believed "was fair" (not concerning internal equity). This Manager was unfortunately losing site over the "BIG PICTURE" as he had 2 lines down and had an OEE hovering below 50%. If you are not familiar with this metric, I would equate 50% OEE to your favorite steakhouse trying to prepare dinner service from a residential kitchen. Downtime is killing him and he has 3 openings on each off shift. For every hour one of these lines are down, it is costing the plant tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Often times, people would rather BE RIGHT than GET IT RIGHT. If this Manager would have taken a step back and looked at his department as it were his own business, he would not have given this a second thought. When leading, do not major in minor things. Think first about your problem and how to solve it
