An appeal to college admissions people whose schools utilize alumni interviews: Please instruct your alumni interviewers that it is not appropriate for them to tell students things like "You're accepted!" or "I know you're going to get in." in their interviews. We both know those alumni interviewers don't see the whole file and aren't making the final admission decisions. While they mean well, I am sure, it isn't their place to say these things to students who have poured their hearts and souls into top-tier college applications. I can preach realism over and over to my students, but when representatives of your university tell them to their faces that they are going to get in, it creates what I believe is an unfair sense of hope (and then failure) in emotionally vulnerable teenagers. Twice in two years now I have had to console students who were deferred or declined outright after receiving such effusive praise from alumni interviewers and getting their hopes up. (Yes, I know a deferral isn't a decline; it also doesn't change the point of this message.) Please. This process is stressful enough on students and their families. They do not deserve additional anxiety and internal conflict because alumni interviewers spoke out of turn. #collegeadmissions #college #collegecounseling #alumniinterviews #collegeinterviews #stress #anxiety #balance #admissions #professionalism

Time to head back home, with 16 coded interviews, 1 new #oralhistory #interview conducted, 5 interview #transcripts finalized. The UMBC Graduate School hosted a Dissertation House writing week. It was great. I think for people that don’t have a clear vision or are stuck, it’s especially valuable. For people who need or like structure, I think it’s probably great. I hated the structure, and I bristle against it. For me, it was about taking time off from my day job (thank you, Andricka (Thomas) Atkins!) and getting to spend the whole time doing school stuff. I think getting out of my house and my usual responsibilities was equally key. Time to spend a few hours in literal airplane mode, starting my results chapter. Goal: 500 words by the time this flight lands.

Is your teen trying to decide if they should interview or not interview with college admissions reps? Interviewing gives students the opportunity to talk to someone who knows the school and ask questions about what life at that particular school is really like. Whether they interview with an admissions counselor, alumnus/a, or a current student, interviews are a student's golden ticket to ask their questions in an intimate setting. Interviewing offers students a chance to provide context for what they share in their applications. Whether virtual or in person, interviews allow students to: 🔹 Share what they love to do and what excites them 🔹 Highlight the ways they have impacted those around them 🔹 Tell their unique story and perspectives 🔹 Ask questions about particular majors or programs that interest them 🔹Learn more about what makes that particular college unique 🔹Understand what it might be like to be a student there For some schools, interviews are part of the evaluation process and an opportunity for students to demonstrate their interest in attending. Still, for most schools, interviews are offered so students can make a more educated decision about whether the school will be a good fit for them. Deputy Head teacher, Esaftey coordinator, CPD Facilitator, Parent Governor, Coach, ECT and ITT mentor.
The excitement of preparing for an interview, the possibility of meeting new educators that could be that catalyst to enable you and your school to transition to the next phase. If you have never worked in education an interview might seem a relatively simple process, however, I can confirm that it's a different experience within education. Pre-visits, school tours, student panels, safeguarding, book scrutinies, learning walks, observations, assemblies, a range of data, financial and prioritisation task and then the odd bit of actual teaching. You then finally arrive at the face-to-face interview board compiled of experts from across the setting. At a time when education is struggling with recruitment and retention of staff, it's always fascinating to see who has applied and explore how they have got to this point in their career. So what would be my takeaways: 1. Be open minded 2. Ask the right question that allows the candidates to shine 3. Don't be afraid to dig deep! 4. Make sure they are the right fit for your setting, skills can be learnt and developed #interview #education #preparation
