It is decided, you will conduct interviews and you already know who your informants will be. At this juncture, what questions to ask to collect as rich and as much relevant empirical material as possible? What is a good interview guide? I very often notice that students contemplate asking too many questions, anticipating nearly all possible follow-up questions. I also note that the interview guide is too often convoluted and not straightforward enough. It is often comprised of interesting, yet useless questions. When constructing your interview guide, bear these principles in mind: 1. On average, an interview lasts between 45 minutes and one hour 2. Time for you to be settled and to introduce each other is 5 minutes off the interview 3. The time to ask a question and start a conversation is about 1 minute Given all this, in order to optimise the exchange, consider each question a 10-minute conversation topic. Pursuantly, I systematically suggest my students should ask between 4 and 6 questions, each whereof being a conversation topic in itself. This shall of course have implications on questions’ articulating. For each of them, ask yourself the following: 1. What is the objective of this question? What do I seek to learn? 2. How does this question help me answer my research question? 3. How is this question grounded in the literature review? Lastly, a good question is a question that directly involves your informant. Avoid at any cost general and generic questions. At worst, these lead to double talk and best to things you already know. How about yourself? How to you advise your students on the construction of their interview guide? #Endofstudiesdissertation #thesis #dissertation #doctorate #mastersthesis #research #qualitativeresearch #interviews #interviewguide #researchquestion
