Jean-Claude Burgelman, director of the Frontiers Planet Prize, addresses the urgent need for transformational science in achieving a 'Green Renaissance': "We need to mobilize the world of science to invest much more resources than what is currently being invested into transformational science, and by making the results of this global scientific challenge, largely funded by public resources, available to a maximum number of people so that new ideas and findings can be picked up as soon as possible." Amidst COP28 negotiations, the International Science Council poses a crucial question: "What's holding us back from urgent climate action?" Director Maria Ivanova sheds light on the pivotal role of social sciences. As we grapple with urgent climate challenges, Ivanova emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to craft actionable policy solutions. The insights from economists and social scientists may hold the key to breaking the political impasse and making a fossil fuel-free future financially inevitable. Let's bridge the gap between science and policy for a sustainable future! 🌱💚 #ClimateAction #COP28 #Sustainability

Happy to have been able to contribute on this very important topic of a fair and just transition to a de-carbonised economy. It is imperative that we on this journey do not forget to take into account the implications on people and communities #twobirds #justtransition #cop28
How can we align a fair and just energy transition with sustainable development ambitions? This week, we held a special event for clients and industry leaders attending #COP28 at the SEE Institute to discuss this critical topic now at the heart of the climate challenge. The event, titled Justified, explored the concept of a 'just transition' from all angles – cutting through the complexity to move the conversation beyond a philosophical debate towards pragmatic action. Through an insightful panel and stimulating audience Q&A, Justified exposed the delicate balancing act and practical steps required to translate a noble ambition into on-the-ground reality. Thank you to our expert panellists for leading such an engaging discussion! Anna Jakobsen, Veronica Scotti, Dr. Adil Alzarooni, Casper Moltke-Leth, Lauren Sorkin Stay tuned to watch the event link on demand. #MissionCritical

Schools have a major role to play in #justenergytransition, by taking actions such as: o Creating a facilities plan that factors in climate change o Setting targets to reduce their carbon footprints, demonstrating to children that the schools will invest in safeguarding their futures o Embedding sustainability within the curriculum and co-curricular activities o Affirming the role of teachers and students as agents of the transition o Converting the challenge of just transition into opportunities for future employment o Upskilling for social-justice-based green jobs which prioritise roles that minimize pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and harm to livelihoods #COP28 #justtransition #sustainableschools

Addressing #ClimateChange is not just a question for world leaders but for us all. 🌐 If climate leaders are to succeed in limiting warming to 1.5 degrees, we all need to consider the issue's complexity and apply a multi-faceted approach to resolving it. Research has an essential role to play in that journey. In honor of #COP28, this RISE collection focuses on the conference's cross-cutting themes: Tech & Innovation, Inclusion, Frontline Communities, and Finance. 🌍 Today, leaders and representatives from around the world convene at #COP28. The central focus of discussion will revolve around the first-ever global stocktake of our response to the climate emergency. Governments will evaluate the strides made and decide on necessary action. 🗣️ In our recent Monday night lecture, 'Are countries meeting their climate promises?', panellists Professor Rebecca Willis, Dr Ashok Sinha, and Oliver Morton reflected on this critical topic. They explored the successes and mistakes of various climate initiatives, covering topics such as the governance of international geoengineering, the role of cities, and the integration of local and indigenous knowledge into climate policies. The dialogue stressed that the journey toward a sustainable and resilient future is an ongoing process. Despite setting global goals, collaborative efforts are still crucial for progress. 🌱 Geographers play a vital role in this effort, contributing to solutions and bringing us closer to a greener tomorrow. Explore our case studies to delve deeper into how geographers apply their skills to advance global goals 👉 https://lnkd.in/eC9jUUkx If you're a member and want to rewatch the Monday night lecture mentioned, please visit the talks on demand section of our website. 🖱️ 📷: Vimal S.

Our 4th day at the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB58) was eventful! Here are some updates from the events we took part in: 👇🏼 Mandated Events: 🔍 Glasgow Dialogue brought together stakeholders to discuss funding arrangements for activities aimed at averting, minimizing, and addressing the loss and damage associated with the adverse impacts of climate change. 🔍 The ACE dialogue focused on monitoring and evaluating ACE implementation through surveys, indicators, and case studies. Breakout groups discussed climate change awareness, policy instruments, cross-cutting#indicators, case studies on climate communication, online platforms for mapping ACE activities, and interagency groups' role in national communication. 🔍 The 15th Research Dialogue provided a platform for sharing research findings, lessons learned, and discussing research needs. 🔍The ACE Focal Points Academy provided training modules to the ACE focal points and ACE negotiators. Our team member Kavindu Ediriweera joined the sessions of ACE Academy which focused on the context setting to the ACE focal points network, National ACE strategies and M&E & reporting. Side events: ✅ The "Youth Stocktake" assessed the challenges faced by youth in participating in UNFCCC processes and proposed a roadmap for enhancing their inclusion. ✅ "Beyond models: How social impacts of climate change are shaped by perceptions" brought together ULg, University of Vienna, AR, PIK explored the influence of societal perceptions on the social impacts of climate change. It emphasized moving beyond traditional modelling approaches to understand this aspect. 📣 Check our story highlights for information, and stay tuned for the upcoming blog post where we will provide a comprehensive overview of our activities during the first week at Bonn! 📑 SLYCAN Trust EthicalX: Climate & Innovation Hub UNFCCC UN UN Climate Change YOUNGO Kavindu Ediriweera #sb58 #unfccc #youth #climateaction #bonnclimatechangeconference #bonn #germany🇩🇪 #ace #foodsystems

🚨"Yet for the #SDGs, the curve has yet to be bent sufficiently to achieve the prosperity a bright-eyed 2015 #internationalcommunity hoped for"- Daniel Perell 👀 Despite the overwhelming evidence of anthropogenic #climatechange, the agreement reached at #COP28, while a step in the right direction, is still insufficient. How can we find the motivation and courage to advocate for #climatejustice and meaningful action to address the #climatecrisis? 🌍️ 👉️Check out Daniel Perell's insightful blog about this critical topic: https://lnkd.in/gmWQRMpA #climatescience #futuregenerations #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sustainablefuture

The science is clear, human activities are pushing the planet towards tipping points that jeopardise the very foundation of human well-being on earth. Is there room for optimism? Tipping points occur not only in undesirable processes, but also in desirable contexts. Whilst human activities are pushing the planet towards negative tipping points, jeopardising the very foundations of human well-being on earth, there exists viable solutions that could keep the world on track – provided there's robust support in policy, finance, and leadership for swift global implementation. Looking forward to moderate this conversation, listen and learn from our expert panel with dr. David Obura (Earth Commission), dr. Arunabha Ghosh (Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW)) Bella Tonkonogy (Climate Policy Initiative) among others as we explore the positive tipping points on the horizon or already achieved, delving into the success factors driving these transformative moments.
