Are you also sick of 'Participationwashing?' We gathered some innovators at #HNPW and asked how to break the cycle of tinkering at the edges of aid with 'participation' that only cements the status quo, and really ensure communities are driving decisions, even - especially - the tough ones like prioritisation. 💡 Suleiman Abdullahi pointed out the drawbacks of the top-down, supply-driven approach in humanitarian action and suggested better financial systems could make a huge difference. 💡 Layla Hasso told us how she tackled mistrust between humanitarian actors and communities in North-West Syria by shaking up coordination. 💡 Caroline Teti lamented the inefficiencies and wasted funds in the supply chain, re-emphasising the potential of cash. 💡 Onkala Adiwu shared her experience from North-East Nigeria in listening to requests for sustainable support even when they challenge mandates, and reminded us of the consequences when agencies ignore community feedback and stick to their original plans. 🎙 Listen to the full conversation here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dQpa5m5C A big thank you to our panelists and participants! See you again next year, #HNPW!

In this new article with Moosa Elayah Al afri (Ph.D.), Hasan Alawami, and Wjdan Almatari- published in Public Administration and Development, we explore a different role #NGOs can play vis-à-vis #PublicAdministration. In countries impacted by internal conflict- such as #Yemen, the public administration might be fractured; to carry out their works, NGOs might need to play a bridging role between the fragmented administration. Not all NGOs can or need to do that; however, a bridging role is boosted by (1) the readiness of administrators to engage; (2) public support for the NGO; and (3) NGOs' adequate #capacity; and (4) the #donor's support.

Resources mobilization by national NGOs Focus on French-speaking Sahel region You are involved in an NNGO, INGO, Donor, UN Agency etc.. working in the French speaking Sahel region? You are invited to fill out this survey, it doesn't take more than 10 minutes : https://lnkd.in/eHUeHTS2 This research is the result of an initiative taken by Efiscens and is not funded by any structure. We aim to offer an inventory of the possibilities that a national NGO can seize to mobilize resources. To show how an organization should prepare to pursue a sustainable resource mobilization strategy. To detail what should be included in a resource mobilization strategy. To demonstrate that beyond traditional fundraising possibilities, many solutions exist to bring together the necessary means necessary for projects’ implementation. Since November 2023, we have managed more 80 interviews with representatives of NNGOs, INGOs, Donors, UN Agencies, Red Cross Committee, Corporations or members of the diasporas. With several networks' help, we are launching a survey to gather information from more than 1 000 persons involved in the sector to have representative statistics on our topic. You are involved in an NNGO, INGO, Donor, UN Agency etc.. working in the French speaking Sahel region? NGOs/CSOs Consortium in Afghanistan, The EPTDO organization established a National Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Consortium in Afghanistan in 2022. The primary objective of this consortium is to share resources and knowledge’s among the NGOs, provide support to mitigate the impacts of climate change, support the livelihoods of marginalized communities, and work together to respond to the urgent needs of vulnerable communities across the country. The process of inviting national NGOs to become members of the consortium is through an online application form. When interested NGOs/CSOs fulfill the minimum criteria for membership, they fill out the form. After a due diligence check, the EPTDO organization signs an MOU with them and grants them membership in the consortium. The governing body of the consortium consists of a secretariat and three additional organizations for management: a Chair, a Co-Chair, and a Coordination organization. They all work under the secretariat. Every year, all members select the Chair, Co-Chair, and Coordinating organization. Since 2022, 43 NGOs/CSOs have been registered and have successfully completed the due diligence process. If you are interested in this membership, please click the link below to register. Celebrating Community-Led Development in Haiti: Hon. Michèle Pierre-Louis’ Inspiring Closing Remarks At the recent Haiti Donor Convening, organized by the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) in partnership with the Haiti Development Institute (HDI), Hon. Michèle Pierre-Louis (Founder of FOKAL and former Prime Minister of Haiti) shared insights on fostering sustainable change through community-led development (CLD) in Haiti. Addressing the Convening virtually, Pierre-Louis emphasized the need for meaningful collaboration based on shared values and a deep understanding of local needs. She highlighted that while financial resources are crucial, the core focus should be on empowering communities, especially women’s organizations, youth, and grassroots institutes. This empowerment is key to driving sustainable change. Pierre-Louis called for a shift from short-term aid to long-term support, stressing the resilience of sectors like small-holder farming. She believes these sectors can make significant contributions when adequately supported. Her remarks resonated deeply with the participants and reinforced the convening's objectives: to enhance collaboration between stakeholders, increase support for CLD, and champion the inherent knowledge within Haitian communities. Let’s continue to commit to these principles, ensuring that systemic and lasting change is community-driven! 🌍🇭🇹 Read more: https://buff.ly/3xIIvya #CommunityLedDevelopment #Haiti #SustainableChange #Empowerment #IAF #HDI #FOKAL

🌍💙 Dive into this impactful video where Yvonne Achieng Arunga, the Country Director for Save the Children Kenya & Madagascar, proudly unveils the positive impact of Save the Children Kenya & Madagascar and the USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance on families in Garissa! 🎥👏 #SavetheChildren #USAID 🚰 Solarized water points are transforming lives, like Hussein* and her 4 children in Bulla Hothan. No more risky walks to crocodile-infested rivers for water as the prolonged drought made this a necessity. Child protection matters! 🌞 Thanks to the solarised water points, families now access clean water closer to home. However, concerns on sustainability arise with plastic tanks lasting 7 years. 🤔 Community members also worry about the future and the $2 monthly contribution during drought hardships. To ensure long-term water access, we need more investments addressing durability and community contributions. 🫱🏾🫲🏽 Grateful for USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, USAID, and the U.S. Embassy in Kenya's support. Let's unite for a sustainable future! Save the Children International Save the Children US

On this #WorldAIDSDay2023 , I want to emphasise the paramount importance of letting communities lead. Empowering communities isn't just the right thing to do; it's the smart thing to do. When communities lead, we tap into an immense wellspring of resilience, innovation, and local knowledge, accelerating progress towards ending AIDS and creating a more just world. #LetCommunitiesLead Uganda Key Populations Consortium (UKPC)

The Namibia First Lady, H.E Monica Geingos who is also the chairperson of AU First Ladies' Association gave a resonating speech on Day 1 of the Africa CDC Youth Pre-conference: Some of my takeaways from her sessions: "African Youths must learn how to use power to advance Africa's public health" "Public Health is political, the rockstars may not want to be political but they have to, to be effective. Politics determines who gets what. Politics and public health are about people". "Never seek power for the sake of it, have a plan and stay faithful to that plan no matter what. We need our best minds at the problem solving table". "Africa needs to ensure Intergenerational dialogues with young people about everything" "Get to the grassroot to get legitimacy for the social impact causes you pursue, don't let this be determined by your donors". "Learn to work and co-exist with those who don't agree with you" "Start where you are, so you can build credibility" #YPC2023 #YouthLeadershipinHealth
