I've traded a Cannes Big Gulp™ of rosé for a warm Carolina breeze this go 'round (what Garden City, SC lacks in Prada stores it makes up for in hushpuppies). Our audiences have never been less captive, so captivating them means entertainment them vs counting on any vintage media buy to herd eyeballs. Herding hearts is a different ballgame – and maybe that's one of the many reasons why a harrowing doc about young women counting on WhatsApp to evade the Taliban, won the Grand Prix in Geoff's jury. What started in the long long ago as more of a niche awards category is fast becoming the industry itself. 🏟 ⚽ From digital dreams to reality: securing our stadiums After the conclusion of two major tournaments, today should be a day of celebration. However, we can’t ignore the troubling scenes at Hard Rock Stadium. Following previous incidents in other high-profile matches, a similar episode occurred at the Copa America Final 2024, with ticketless fans storming the venue. Although this competition may not have received the same media attention, it serves as another reality check for the sports world, especially football. With virtual stadium experiences still in development and not yet widely accessible, it is crucial to raise awareness about the consequences of such breaches. While enhanced security measures, improved ticketing systems, and collaboration with local authorities are important steps taken by hosts, more effort is needed in fan education and communication. I firmly believe in the benefits technology brings and will continue to bring to our stadium experiences. Just as campaigns have successfully addressed piracy and respect for referees, we need global initiatives to start conversations and raise awareness about legal actions against these breaches. Ultimately, we are failing to protect and personalize the experience for those who have legitimately purchased tickets.
