During a recent insightful discussion held by the North Africa Initiative, Fadi Abilmona, UNDP Regional Advisor, emphasized the critical need for a holistic approach to the crisis in Sudan. He advocated for the integration of humanitarian aid, development, and peacebuilding from the outset, challenging the conventional sequential approach to crisis management. Abilmona highlighted the 'Humanitarian Development Peace Nexus,' which proposes that simultaneous actions in these three areas can more effectively address the needs of affected populations and lead to sustainable outcomes. This approach is essential in regions like Sudan, where prolonged cycles of violence have devastated communities. We would be interested in your thoughts on how we can apply this Nexus approach in other conflict-affected regions? #SudanCrisis #HumanitarianAid #SustainableDevelopment #PeaceBuilding

▶️ Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution Practitioner ⭐ Community Engagement and Accountability ⭐ Adaptive management ⭐ Grant Management ⭐ Programs/Project Management ⭐ Humanitarian Response
Uniting for #Sudan and its Neighbors The International Humanitarian Conference for #Sudan and its neighbours, co-hosted in Paris by France, Germany, and the European Union, marked a critical juncture in international efforts to support the crisis in #Sudan and its neighboring countries. The convening of Member States, international bodies, and NGOs resulted in a commendable pledge of €2.03 billion to aid those impacted by the ongoing conflicts. Although this falls short of the $4.1 billion urgently needed to assist over 14.7 million people in #Sudan and millions more in host countries, it's a first step in the right direction. The conference was a testament to global solidarity, illustrating a united front to address the humanitarian needs of #Sudan. Bringing together stakeholders from various countries and international NGOs ensures that various perspectives and resources are harnessed. However, there was also a notable absence of #local voices. While the conference saw active participation from international entities, there could have been a greater inclusion of #local organizations from Sudan and neighboring areas. Their insights would have helped tailor the aid to meet the specific needs of local populations effectively. In addition, the conference focuses primarily on immediate financial aid, overshadowing the need to develop long-term strategies to address the #root causes of the conflict and ensure sustainable peace and development. To build on the successes of this conference, future initiatives must aim to involve more #local stakeholders in the planning and execution of aid programs. Additionally, there should be a strategic focus on not just alleviating the current crisis but also on fostering long-term #peace and stability in the region. The commitments made are a promising step forward, but the true test will be their swift and effective implementation, ensuring they meet the urgent and diverse needs of those affected by the conflict in #Sudan. As we continue to support and monitor these efforts, let's also call for deeper engagement and more comprehensive strategies that address both immediate and enduring challenges in the region. #peaceforsudan

Conflict is Africa biggest threat, how can we confront it? @ Renaissance Foundation for Peacebuilders (REFOP) ; we have known the how, now is the when. It is our priority to work towards restoration of sustainable peace in Africa through non-kinetic approach and pave the way for a thriving Africa's economy. Conflict is responsible for causing development in reversal in Africa. Africa lost $18 billion dollar to conflict every year. Conflict is Africa biggest Challenge. Africa's Nations in Conflict have on average 50 percent infant mortality, 15% more unemployed persons and 5 percent reduction in life expectancy (Oxfam, 2021). The economic cost of conflict in Africa is equivalent to the total value of the continent foreign aid since 1990. Conflict holds back economic development, causes instability, widen inequality, erodes human capital, drains resources, causes development in reversal, reduces foreign Direct Investment (FDI), increases the rate of unemployed person through job loss, causes loss of lives, properties and investment, create poverty and increases the number of poor persons, result to low patronage and make business environment unhealthy for investors. It is not only a matter of necessity to confront this threat but a matter of obligation. A peaceful and economically prosperous Africa is possible.

Great to see (and contribute to) a panel on the worsening humanitarian situation in North-West Nigeria at the European Humanitarian Forum last week, where over 6M people are projected to be food insecure during the lean season this year. Forgotten crisis, politicisation of aid, coordination gaps, meagre resources, insecurity, underdevelopment... The challenges are huge, but so are the needs and the risks if they are not met. It all starts with the acknowledgement of needs and the commitment to support, and this was an important milestone. Could this be an opportunity to show that the community (government, NNGOs and CSOs, INGOs, UN agencies, etc.) can work together to provide life-saving assistance while also looking at longer terms outcomes? And what is at stake if we fail, in such a fragile context considering the situation in this region today? #EHF Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp ACTION CONTRE LA FAIM SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC

Fascinating piece here by Ed Schenkenberg van Mierop in The New Humanitarian on the crisis in northern Ethiopia. Lots to learn here on the frustrations and failure of UN-led collective efforts as well as what should be learned from them. "Endless global discussions on strengthening capacity, localising decision-making, and connecting humanitarian and development assistance have done little to avoid repeated failures. Accountability for this is long overdue." https://lnkd.in/eRdDGvZg
The UN-led response in Ethiopia was a failure. It’s time for accountability.

"Headlines chase each other but #conflicts and their devastating consequences do not cease when the attention moves elsewhere." - I joined AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Event to speak about forgotten #frontlines and the changing nature of conflicts. From Syria, Sudan, Nagorno Karabakh, and Libya to Israel and the Occupied territories, the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, founded 160 years ago, continues to assist and protect the dignity of affected populations especially in situations of protracted conflicts or that do not make the headlines. I had three messages: 1️⃣ Remain committed to our #humanitarian values; 2️⃣ Be close to the affected #communities and empower them for a greater impact than what a few weeks of high-profile news coverage could bring; 3️⃣ Strong collaboration with multiple actors, governments, private sector, #development actors to meet the evolving needs in an environment of shrinking funding. Together with Nena Stoiljkovic and the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, we raised how forgotten crises cause the most complex needs to address and require systemic solutions to bring sustainable #HumanitarianImpact. #AidEx2023 #HumanitarianAid
