Please join us at this Pre-Conference event whereby I will represent Community Based Organisations (CBOs) Coalition Malawi as one of the Panelist. The Pre-Conference, titled "Shifting Power and Advancing Equity in African Population Research and Collaborations," aims to examine the power dynamics that exist in demographic research collaborations in the African context and explore strategies to foster more equitable and inclusive practices. Bridging the gap between research findings and practical implementation remains a challenge. There is a need to involve communities in research design, implementation, and evaluation. This can ensure relevance and responsiveness to local needs. Researchers, policymakers, communities and practitioners must collaborate effectively to translate research into real-world impact. By fostering collaboration, transparency, and equitable access, we can enhance the relationship between research and societal well-being. Community-based organisations can play a crucial role in shaping national research agendas and promoting the wellbeing of populations. CBOs/CSOs involvement in setting research agendas can ensure that research priorities align with societal needs, promote transparency, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of populations. CBOs/CSOs can contribute by providing insights, advocating for specific research priorities, and ensuring that societal needs are considered. I've been thinking a lot about research improvement in development. Research improvement is the focus of my old specialty, meta-research, or research on research. Meta-research uses a variety of behavioral science methods to improve the way research is done, usually with a focus on improving the robustness or basic soundness of research. For the past two and a half years, I've been asking myself a question: what if we fused the insights of meta-research with the priorities of development? What would such a field look like, and what would its priorities be? The result is this book, edited with Mario Schmidt, which brings together 20 different essays on this topic. The essays cover different ground, but are nevertheless coherent in their methods, topics, and emphasis. I'll be talking a lot more about this book in the coming weeks, but I hope I've piqued your interest. Stay tuned.
As part of the 2024 SIPS conference, we’ll be launching a new book authored by people in both research and international development at our Nairobi office on June 11. Titled 𝐀 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐰: 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚-𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡, the book looks at the relationship between meta-research and global development. Watch out for updates on our social media platforms.

Award winning researcher, teacher and higher education leader | Associate Professor| Researches rhetoric, media and multilingualism |
Nothing says "Ivory Tower" like academic conferences. From stuffy presentations to outdated formats, these spaces can feel disconnected from the real world. In 2021, I had the opportunity to work on something different: an (un)Conference, hosted by HELTASA. This experience challenged my assumptions about knowledge sharing and collaboration. In our latest paper, published in the CriSTaL Journal, my colleagues Daniela Gachago, Prof Mlamuli Hlatshwayo, PhD, Leanri van Heerden and I reflect on this experience through a decolonial lens. We explore the opportunities and challenges of adopting both principles of unconferencing and decolonisation in our practice. The selected vignettes of reflective moments in planning and facilitating this (un)conference serve as a testament to our learnings. My conferencing season gets underway this week as I attend the #AfricanMediaCouncil's conference in Cape Town with colleagues from the Press Council, so this paper feels particularly timely.
