Individual Contributors are the true driving force behind any successful project. 🚀 In software engineering, the spotlight often shines on the leaders and strategic visionaries. However, it's the individual contributors who are the lifeblood of any good product. Here's why I believe ICs are invaluable: 1️⃣ 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀: ICs possess deep technical expertise, often honing their skills through years of hands-on experience. They're the ones troubleshooting, coding, and turning abstract ideas into tangible solutions. 2️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: The best ideas often come from those who are in the trenches every day. ICs, with their close proximity to the work and its challenges, are uniquely positioned to innovate and drive change. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Individual contributors shape and uphold the culture of a team. Their day-to-day interactions, work ethic, and attitudes set a tone that can uplift and inspire the entire group. 4️⃣ 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: In a rapidly evolving field like software engineering, ICs are often the first to adapt to new technologies and methodologies, keeping the team at the cutting edge. As leaders, it's our job to empower and support ICs. This means providing them with the tools and environment they need to thrive, recognizing their contributions, and fostering a culture where their voices are heard and valued. Let's give a shout-out to the unsung heroes in our midst! 👏 #EngineeringExcellence #Teamwork #Innovation

Senior Mining and Metals Industry Executive | Industrial Digital Transformation | Critical Energy Transition Minerals x Technology | Keynote Speaker | Built Technology and Innovation Teams | Continuous Improvement
For great products and successful companies, it is always said : They had a great "WHY" (A well identified problem statement, a perceived gap in the market) They had a great team that could figure out the "HOW" (Tools and design to reach the solution, work, focus and discipline) They even had a great WHAT (Culture, Policies, Legacy, relationships) But what is almost never talked is the "WHEN". When did they come out with this product? Were the customers ready for it? Was the timing incorrect? The WHEN is almost as critical as the other three, and is often dismissed as luck, or bad luck when things go good or bad. "The time is now" is good to talk about, but not always apt. No amount of data or prediction can help anyone get the "WHEN" right. It is only pure instinct that lets you call "Heads/Tails" when the coin is in the air.

Had an interesting conversation with someone who asked me what in my opinion makes a great Software Development Manager... Without hesitation my answer highlighted 2 things. 1. Its about understanding and inspiring people. It's the people who deliver the tech and make the magic on project. Inspired people are more creative, solve problems and generally deliver amazing results. My favourite analogy is that of an army general where you devise the battle strategy and then rally the masses. Once you go into war it's about leading the troops through unknown terrain. Explaining the purpose and execution of the journey depending on where each individual is at. You celebrate the individual victories of every soldier and the team as a whole. When the troop takes a beating, you bandaid, re-strategise and keep going. 2. It's about understand and being able to navigate the changing world of Technology. The key here is constant learning. There is always something new and latest flavour of the day. As a technology manager your duty is to make technology work for the business that you serve. It's about understanding what the business wants and marrying the technology to meet the need. Trends come and go but its always important to keep in mind that technology is a tool to serve the business and it must be managed accordingly.

Tech should solve existing problems without creating larger new ones. It’s amazing how often we lean into tech that solves a problem we didn’t have while it simultaneously creates new ones, often bigger than the original. Think back through your own career for some examples. Hint: It’s probably still on somebody’s books but collecting dust in a closet somewhere onsite.
