"From March 2023 through March 2024, the Universal Rights Group (URG) conducted an analysis to assess and understand the extent to which the United Nations (UN) human rights system focuses on the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, as well as the level of implementation and impact of environment-related recommendations extended to States by the three main human rights mechanisms: the UPR, the Treaty Bodies, and the Special Procedures. This analysis is part of a growing movement at the UN to bridge the international and national levels, specifically to measure and understand the degree to which States’ international human rights obligations and commitments are being translated into improved laws, policies, and practices at the national level, leading to tangible improvements in the enjoyment of human rights and, in the case of this report, the protection of the natural environment."

We are excited to present #MarineConservation as the theme of our next #LiveWebinar on April 25, lead by Jade Jones, Richard Caddell (#CardiffUniversity), and Wilf Swartz (Dalhousie University). The High Seas beckons—migratory corridors and biological hubs serve as habitat for #biodiversity and a source of livelihood for communities worldwide. Uncover the dynamic challenges that arise when environmental protection obligations clash with the freedoms of the #HighSeas, such as the right to navigate and use natural resources from the ocean. We’ll delve into pressing questions: What legal basis can bring everyone together to mitigate gaps in a multinational governance framework? What potentials does the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of The Sea (UNDOALOS) biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (#BBNJ) treaty present? During the webinar, we’ll break down where we’ve been to understand where we can potentially go. Join us to learn about the reality of #marinepolicy at the international scale. BREAKING: After many political cliffhangers, the #EU #NatureRestorationLaw was just approved this morning! The final text is watered down, including an 'emergency brake' if perceived nature actions threaten food security - while in reality, it is rather biodiversity collapse & ecosystem degradation that threaten our food security. However, it still is a groundbreaking and globally leading restoration law. The first of its kind at this scale! 🌍 EnviCrimeNet is proud to join today's 'Priorities for Multilateral Action Against Environmental Crime' event. Environmental crime is a major threat to global stability, exacerbating climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. It fuels insecurity, political instability, human rights violations, and pandemics, while undermining efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This event, supported by the #EU through the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime #ECOSOLVEproject, aims to enhance the global #response to environmental crime. The meeting will focus on the links between #organizedcrime, #environmentaldamage, and related #security and #development issues. #EnvironmentalCrime #GlobalSecurity #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #SDGs #EnviCrimeNet

🎉 The #NatureRestorationLaw, spearheaded by Cesar Luena, Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament (S&D) and The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, is now published in the Official Journal of the EU. After two years of difficult negotiations, facing opposition and disinformation from conservative groups and policymakers, overseen by four different presidencies of the Council of the European Union, the NRL was adopted. Effective and timely implementation of the NRL is crucial for achieving the European Green Deal’s climate targets and objectives of the EU Biodiversity for 2030 and the Global Biodiversity Framework. Read the analysis by Gabrielle Aubert for more on the adoption journey of the law. ➡️https://lnkd.in/dqwp-VeU #NatureRestorationLaw #EUGreenDeal #biodiversity #GlobalBiodiversityFramework

The links between climate change and other global challenges have never been stronger. 🌍🌱 The UK Government’s 2023 Integrated Review Refresh reinforced that tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental damage remains the UK’s first thematic priority. Monitoring, evaluation and learning (#MEL) has a key role to play in ensuring sustainable, effective progress toward this. Discover how we are supporting more effective programming for the UK Department of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra)’s international development portfolio: 👉 https://bit.ly/4aE2L25 🤝 We are working in partnership with Oxford Policy Management to co-lead a consortium including International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP), Howell Marine Consulting and Resource Futures. #Evaluation #MonitoringandEvaluation #ClimateChange #GlobalDev #Defra #ClimateAction #Biodiversity
